Edited by alleycat (25274) on 2004-03-15 07:53:50 I just edited the title a little, worried it would attract the wrong kind of crowd, even though you did do a good job on warning everybody.

This is especially for dancergirl10588. ;)

Above are two pics of my legs. The first was the very first picture I had ever taken years and years ago. Notice the bent legs (and scrawnyness! lol)
Now, they are SO much better! (and yay for muscles too!)

Image hotlink - 'http://img17.photobucket.com/albums/v50/dachshundlover/legexercise.jpg'

Ok, before anyone gets mad at me for "wrecking my legs" (hehe), just lemme explain myself. :) I have always had slightly bent looking legs, and it's SO annoying when I had teachers who didn't know me say "Straighten your legs!" when I was literally locking them. :? So, tryed to devise a few exercises to achieve hyper-extension and can proudly say that over the past few years (plus all the picture taking! lol), that they have started to slightly hyper-extend.

Now, my legs will never get really hyper because they aren't built that way, but I was able to get a little bit and it has really improved my lines and balance! (yes, it's VERY hard to balance on slightly bent knees! hehe)

Also, it's VERY important to do alot of calf-stretches and especially hamstring stretches along with this. Often times, legs look bent because they don't have the full flexibility they could, so that's really, really a big part of it. One other exercise is just practice locking your knees really hard and pulling back into your leg, then relax.

Try to do this as often as you can...if you're watching T.V. reading, before ballet, in bed (lol!), etc. I've done this practically ever day for the past...umm...two or so years and gradually, it's gotten better.

One last tip. My teachers tell me to think of straightening my leg from the underneath muscles, NOT to top. We tend to grip from the top and it only makes the "bent" look worse. Try and lengthen up and out of the back of your leg. And also, it creates more of a line if you have decent quad muscles to make the line appear more hyper. lol. This is one reason I've worked really hard to get muscles.

(Remember, this is only for people with REALLY bent knees...not to make hyper-extended people any worse! hehe) I don't want anyone getting hurt! Please be careful and STOP doing this if you get pain in your legs! (I had just a little at first...felt sorta like growing pains, but it was totally worth it to me! :) )

~D~

P.s. I'm really sorry if I offended anyone with this post or you think I'm totally screwed up in my goal for hyper-legs, but it's really helped the line and balance improve. :)

Thank you! I have the problem that my knees always look bent and I hate it. I know that hyperextensive legs aren´t good and I don´t wnat huge hyperextension (and I know that I could never have it), but a little bit would be wonderful.
I´ll try it.

Kathy

Great post D-lover, aiming to just get a straight leg is fine, be careful that those who try these stretches do not wreck your knees. Really stretching the muscles of the legs will help them to straighten, as well as D-lover said using the hamstrings to pull up as well as the quads will help tremendously. But remember, drastically changing the natural shape of your body can lead to problems in the future, so be careful.

Thanks so much! My knees almost always look bent even if they aren't. Sometimes my teacher will come up to me while I'm in an extension and do pretty much what you did in those excercises and it won't make too much of a difference in the line. Sometimes we do those stretches, but I didn't realize they were for hyperextension, lol. Thanks so much!
