For those of you who don’t know what the Moonwalk is, it is a dance move, under the break dancing category of ‘floats’. A float is an illusion that makes your dance look more clean and technical. It was made famous, and perfected by Michael Jackson, the King of Pop. It is an illusion that looks like you are walking backwards, but this move is not actually a walk, it just looks as if you were, but instead of moving forward, you go backwards and ‘float’, as if you were walking on the moon.
WARNING: You may look like a fool at the beginning, but there is always a first time. Perhaps you could try to perform the move in private, and just remember to PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!!!
1st: Make sure you are wearing a pair of shoes with a low grip, dress shoes are recommended, although not necessary, also, socks are great too.
2nd: You will not do the Moonwalk properly with a sticky floor. A bare floor or light concrete is okay.
3rd: Stand with both feet close to each other about 4 fingers width apart. Approximately two to five inches.
4th: Lift the heel of one foot so you are standing on your toes [we’ll say your right foot for example.] Some people recommend that you place the toes of your right foot in line with half of your left foot, but this is not necessary.
5th: Place most of your weight onto your right foot, and slowly drag back the left foot, keeping it flat on the ground. My #1 TIP...KEY POINT: act as if you are scraping gum off of the heel of your [left] shoe.
6th: You must time correctly so that when your left foot has gone back all the way, you lift the heel and stand on your toes and put your right foot flat on the ground.
7th: Keep practicing the above steps until you can make that movement subconsciously without thought.
8th: Once you’ve mastered that glide backwards with the left foot and the timing of lifting the heel of the left and properly putting your right heel down, move it out a foots-worth away from the toes on the right.
9th: Once your left foot is back in the original starting position of the right one, lift the heel once more of the right making sure the knee is bent. Now repeat step 5. Keep practicing until you have the whole thing figured out and has been verified by others, and you feel comfortable with it. You should eventually get that gravity-defying effect and you’ll moonwalk like a pro.
10th: Once you’ve figured it out for the right leg bending, switch legs and try the same with the other foot. Lift the heel of left, lower as you glide right back. Left still on the ground, throw out right foot, lift up heel of left foot, and once again slide right foot back as left heel is lowered.
EXTRA TIPS
Take your time and don't jump ahead.
Always remember to keep your heel down on the floor when you're sliding back.
And keep in mind the KEY POINT: Pretend you are scraping gum off of the heel of the foot sliding back.
Please be sure to WARM UP and COOL DOWN before and after dancing!
Warming Up and Cooling Down are a series of exercises and stretches in helping your body prepare for and/or relax from dancing. It is highly enforced in to prevent injury!
STAY HYDRATED!
Be sure to have a bottle of water with you nearby. Especially if you decide to keep practicing.
