Whats the best way to do the white stripes on the hornpipe collar. Have sent off for the pattern but haven't got it yet so just looking around for the materials I'll need. - Is there a pre-made ribbon for this or do you have to make it?
Thanks

I've used 1/4 inch twill tape - sometimes hard to find. Also, I've used a double needle - so you sew both sides in one go.

Good luck.

Ive used twill tape (absolutely hard to find), ribbon and double fold bias tape in a pinch.
To be honest the easiest to work with was the bais tape. Being several layers thick it didn't stretch or move around much and looked fine once finished.

I transfer the lines from the pattern onto the collar and then just follow the lines

I was wondering whether the bias tape could be used - so thats ok then. Will try and find the other stuff too.
Thanks for your help.

That stuff looks like it would work. I've attached a picture of twill tape from a web-search. It is similar.

I have also used "Middy Braid". It was similar to twill tape but I haven't been able to find it for some time

I'm not sure where you are located, but I have bought packages of twill tape at Fabricland (in Canada). I sewed both sides separately with a straight stitch for the first hornpipe I sewed, but I used a zig zag stitch for the second one... and you can't see the difference - but the zig zag was faster.

Thanks for all the info - Ive ordered some twill tape so I'll see how it looks when I get it - its not very expensive. Will take on your tips though sadly my sewing machine is very old and sews beautifully but only forwards and backwards!

I use 6mm white grograin ribbon. Fabricland in Canada used to sell small spools of it but now I have to get it from JoAnns in the USA. Inexpensive and easy to use. I sew it on using a zig-zag stitch. If your collar is navy remember to put navy thread in your bobbin.

I'm another fan of middy braid. Actually, sailor collars are EXACTLY what middy braid is designed to trim!
