They can wear tartan trews or their regular attire. :)

My boys wear the kilt. I love not having to deal with costume changes.

Thanks everyone!

So where do you get your tartan trews from? Is there someone in particular that makes them? Thanks!

I make them for my son. He likes them with a zipper and pockets so they are very difficult to make. I don't know of anyone who makes them but you could try a regular seamstress/tailor. You just need to have them make the rise to the waist very high or else the shirt will show when the arms are raised. you also need to make sure you match the tartan at the seams and in the front. Basting is the only way I have found to keep them from shifting in the machine.

Good luck.

Thanks DanceMom44. Where do you buy your tartan from? does it have to be a particular weight of wool? or pattern (such as dress tartan)?

Thanks!!

I use the same tartan as whatever my son's kilt is so he can wear his highland socks with them. I line the front of the pants past the knee so they feel better on the inside

Those look fantastic! you do a great job on his trews :)

Aren't they a bit hot and heavy being wool? Good tip about lining them.

Thanks!

My son hasn't mentioned about them being particularly hot. Wool is actually probably cooler than polyester hornpipe pants.

Hi, I'm just scrolling thru looking for costuming for my boys and found this thread. I'm having an awful time finding kilts let alone trews to fit them! Would love to see them in trews some day!

I posted this question on another thread also: Do boys compete in the hornpipe?

Yes they do compete in the Hornpipe. They also compete in the jig (when they get to those levels).

Do they wear trews for ALL Nationals?? I would love my boys in these for a change from the kilt (eventually), but wanna make sure trews are worn for more than the ST.
Thanx :)

Yes, they CAN wear the trews for all national dances (but they are also allowed to wear the kilt).

Ok, that helps! My boys are in Beginner, one is more advanced than the other because my older boy stopped after 2 yrs of basic lessons, then the other started and is in 3rd year now and really moving along, and started competing, loves the Flora, so wanted to make sure they can wear trews....the kilt is fine, no changing req'd, but its nice to wear something different, and my youngest LOVES the trews above :). Now to find material and someone to make them!

My daughter is a Premier but she has stopped dancing, hopefully its not permanent after all that time, effort and money! My older son hasn't competed yet but is almost ready, after deciding to "get back at it"...he's also learning pipe chanter...boys just had exams and the examiner just loved them :). Now to find some trews and a smaller sporran! Always something!
