Do It YourselfI pre-paid weight on a box - box too big

I'm shipping a care package to my penpal in Switzerland and I pre-paid a box for 1.5kg so I would be forced to stick to that limit. Stupidly my box is too big - I feel - and weighs 495g itself (OUCH).
I'm thinking of getting a smaller box. But would they transfer the payment on the larger box to the smaller box? I'd probably only save myself 100g but that really is quite vital here as I'm 200g over and don't want to pay for 2kg ($75). This is really stressing me out because if my box is 500g, that means I'm basically paying $16 for a damn box (plus the $3.50 for the actual box)!

Or you could get the smaller box, and save the large box for posting something light but bulky? However this would only work if you are going to post another parcel in the near future, as otherwise I would forget about the saved box!
Is this through the post office? Because sometimes the post office staff are lovely and helpful, but sometimes you get a really grumpy person who isn't helpful.
