Adult dancer : first championship

For all those out there who started as adults-keep going!Amazing things can happen! It's a road really only other adult dancers can understand. I look to you for inspiration and has made so much difference to me.

Began as a complete beginner just shy of 5 years ago-no previous dance experience. Started to compete 6 months after my first lesson just for experience and hoped to push myself to get better. Saw other adult beginners here and there through my journey and thought-If they can, I can too!

So after getting through beginner and novice, after losing an entire year to injury and no teacher. After finding a new teacher and dancing as a premier for a year-what I thought was impossible became possible...

I danced in my first championship. Dancing against much younger, much more experienced dancers was completely nerve wracking and I thought, what am I doing? This is impossible. I wanted to run away! and then I thought...

you love this, just dance for the love and I had the best day of dancing in my life.

Did not place (no shock there LOL!) but I -did- manage to get judges points and I am so excited I just wanted to share...to let other adults out there know-amazing things can happen.

To thank all of you dancers out there adult or otherwise for inspiring me.
To thank my teacher for pushing me even if I growled at her for it at the time.

For me this weekend, I went from 'impossible' to I'm possible!

Yay! Way to go! I'm in the same boat as you - started 6 years ago with no previous dance experience - and I'm working as hard as I can to get to premier. You're an inspiration!

Congrats!!!

That's a Fantastic Accomplishment... and just proves, that if you start something you never know what you will achieve.. but if you never start, you'll never know what you would have been able to achieve.

I hear you on the injury.. and I was 2 years away with no teacher, or time that would allow for lessons.

However I'm back at it.. and although I'm not the best, or most graceful, or flexible.. I do the Best that I Can Do!

First comp back after a very long hiatus.. thinking it's just to get back out there, I only placed in 1 dance out of 4.. but it was a 3rd! (Took me totally off guard)

Maybe I just might make it out of Novice ;)

Good for you for dancing in a Championship! Just getting through those dances is major, not an easy feat at all.

Thank you all! You are right about just getting through the dances-phew! My stamina is one of my biggest things I am still working on. : )

Loricook: you are one of the ones who has been an inspiration to me from my beginning. You were one of the first to offer encouragement-even though we've never met. And I've seen you encourage so many others here at DDN, you always offer such enthusiasm it is contagious!

Gapgirl1: keep going! And let us know how your journey is working out. You never know who you will inspire! It does take a lot of hard work, no matter what your goals are, but if you have the love of this dance behind it that hard works doesn't feel so hard.

Skyesbridge: I what you said here: "if you start something you never know what you will achieve.. but if you never start, you'll never know what you would have been able to achieve."

It sums it up perfectly. And allow me to send up congratulations to you for coming back and for getting a third! That's terrific! ( I was always known as the "one dance wonder" because I would often do well in one dance at a competition though not in the others and it was always a different dance!) I have high hopes for you making it to Intermediate and when you do...let us know!

I started as an adult as well! I had done ballet for many years, but I fell in love with highland dancing. Now I am a teacher, and it's wonderful to teach others!

DancrColleen: I am hoping to get my teachers one day as well! So glad to hear of others managing to do this.

Gapgirl1: Congratulations!I am so excited for you for your first intermediate! What dances are you doing? Where about in the world are you dancing? What I remember most about my first intermediate is that moment it sank in that the clock was now ticking and as long as I was dancing in a years time I would be premier. No turning back! eep! The nice thing is...no stamps to worry about, just dance each dance. Take some nice deep breaths before each dance, enjoy what you are doing and it will show. My best recommendation is dance your intermediate year as if you are already premier. There is a lot to take on board with new dances, longer steps etc. but you can do this!

I am getting ready for the USIR weekend near the end of July. I'll be dancing in the premiership (my first!) and prechampionship on the friday and my first ever choreography on the sunday. Saturday I get to watch all the amazing dancers in the US Championship. Biggest challenge right now is struggling to train with a possible herniated disc (seeing the back specialist in a couple of days).

Let us know how your competition goes!
