How do you know if you have a bladder infection?

I've had a bladder infection before so I know it burns when you pee. Here is why I am questioning what I have.

About a month ago or so I was in the bathtub and washed down there. When I finished, it burned really bad. For about 2 days it burned and not just when I peed so I knew it had to be that soap and I shouldn't have used it there. It went away and there was no more burning, However, I found I was peeing a lot. Sometimes I really have to go big time! I'm not sure if that is because I am getting older (61) so my bladder has dropped or it's a bladder infection. I have a huge hemorrhoid from 2 different meds I was on when I was sick twice years ago. They made me horribly constipated so everyday I wear an ultra thin maxi because the hemorrhoids bleed. Sometimes the pads smell like ammonia! I take a probiotic everyday along with a multi vitamin. My mom was taking something natural for having to go to the bathroom a lot and I decided to take it too besides doing keigil's. However, if I have a bladder infection I don't need to take the natural thing for peeing to much.

I have a new doctor since Obamacare. My doctor that I've had since the 70's wouldn't take me anymore and has since retired. I've had 5 different doctors since last Nov. and a new one will be my 5th. I don't have an appointment till Nov. and making an appointment isn't as easy as it was with my other doctor.

Do you think I have a bladder infection? What should I do? I drink 8 glasses of water in the spring and summer, 6 in the fall and winter. I went on-line to see how much I should be drinking. They asked for my height, weight and I think how old I was so that's how I know. I've heard if your pee has a smell you are dehydrated. How could that be? I'm child sized and I can't print my height and weight here.

Any help would be appreciated.

Can you go to urgent care since you can't get an appointment with your primary? They don't all take the same insurances though but usually tell you ahead of time. Though most primaries usually leave at least some time slots open each week (or really each day) just for people with actual illnesses and not getting routine exams. Have you explained the problem to the receptionist or did you just ask for the earliest appointment? In addition, does your insurance require you get a referral first from a PCP or can you call a specialist on your own?

Your primary care provider can order a simple urine test to determine if you have an infection.

I urge you to do this sooner than later. As uncomfortable as bladder inflections can be, burning and urgency, if the infections travels to your kidney's it can be much more serious.

Planned Parenthood can also help you.

Good luck.

I have state insurance so I go to a clinic which is where my new 5th doctor is. I hate it but no one else will take my insurance. My mom has a new doctor. We used to go to the same doctor so we would get appointments on the same day but he retired. Her new doctor won't take my insurance. We do have a Walk In Clinic in town that I could go to but I don't know if they take my insurance. Right now I don't care if they do or not I just want to get diagnosed.

There is no burning at all. Like I said, for 2 days I had burning all the time because of a soap I used down their but that went away. That was about a month ago.

Last night was the worst! I was up every 2 hours or so because I really had to pee! We have one bathroom and my dad and mom both have dropped bladders so they are always peeing. It's no fun when we all have to go. I don't want another night like that. I bought some cranberry pills which is know is good for that. I thought they would be natural because the pills for always going were made of pumpkin seeds. I didn't look on the package until after I got them home. They were loaded with sugar! I threw them out and stopped taking them.

Is there a practice nurse who you could see you so you could at least get an evaluation? Those symptoms sound like they could be an infection, if it is you can't wait until November to get it looked at.

You've already made it months longer than I would have. Since waiting it out is making it worse, go to an Urgent Care or something. The CVS in the next town over has a Minute Clinic in it - they can't do all the services a doctors office can (they can't take X-Rays, just for the example), but for something this point and shoot, they should be able to help.

Our CVS doesn't have a minute clinic. I am going to call tomorrow and see if they will take me where I go because it's an emergency.. If they won't, I will go to our walk in center. I'm not going to wait any longer because now I'm thinking from what you are saying it probably is a UTI.

How late is the walk in clinic in your town open? Our walk in/urgent care will take patients until 9:00 PM. And they do everything on site. I had an x-ray last spring, it takes 2 days to read x-rays at my doctors office, they did it inside of 10 minutes. :O

I think 5 but I'm not sure. The last 2 times I went there years ago I went in the morning. I think once we tried to go after 5 and they were closed. Will let you know what they say when I go wherever I can tomorrow. I just can't wait to stop peeing!

I went to our walk in center and I had to pee into a cup. They thought they needed more so they swabbed me. Getting a paps test always really hurts and this did too. Who knows why? They said I do have something but they aren't sure if it's a UTI or Bacterial Vaginitis. They didn't want to put me on any meds until they were sure what it was. They said if they put me on something and it was something else, then they would just have to change the meds. Tomorrow is Sun. but I went on Fri. and they said they would call in 2 days. I will be waiting for their phone call. As soon as I was done I had to pee again and it was burning! It burned once at home and then it stopped. She said it seemed like I was fighting it off. Let's hope so! They told me to drink plenty of water. If I drink anymore I'm going to float away! As it is, I have to pee all the time and that's just with the 8 glasses I drink a day in the spring and summer!
Thanks guys for making me go even though I didn't think that's what it was. I can't wait until I can start on some kind of medication and this all goes away.

I'm so glad you went to get checked out! UTI are just so miserable to have to cope with, one thing that can help is cranberry juice, not cranberry drink, cranberry juice. Drink doesn't necessarily contain any juice and can just be flavoured water, if it has juice written on the carton then it's the real deal.

It's not a cure but it can help with some of the symptoms. My daughter gets UTI's and finds this helps her a lot.

If the surgery is open tomorrow ring them if they don't get back to you first.

I bought Cranberry Pills because I hate the taste of Cranberry Juice or Cranberries in general. It was the same company that makes bladder control pills that are natural, made of our pumpkin seeds. This was real cranberries but they were loaded with sugar! I should have taken them all anyway because I can't afford to waste any money and I should have read the label in the store. I assumed the other pills were natural with nothing like tons of sugar added so I figured these would be too which is why I didn't look in the store. I took some, saw that and threw the rest away. I'll have to get some that have nothing but Cranberries in them and you can swallow them, not chew and they aren't huge (I have a swallowing problem) so I don't have a problem taking them. I just want to stop all this peeing ever half hour or so! I need to not see a bathroom toilet for a while! LOL

They said I have a UTI and not Bacteria Vaginosis. They prescribed an antibiotic twice a day for 7 days. Nitrofurant Monohy is the name of it. I took one on Fri. when I got the prescription because I got it so late and really started it last Sat. with 2. I'm on it for 7 days. I'm also taking some natural cranberry pills with no sugar in them. I still feel like I am peeing all the time! Last night I got up 3 times again! I'm also wondering if I should go to my Health & Wellness Center and have them check me? Our walk-in center says if I'm not better to see my regular doctor. It's so hard to get an appointment with them, never mind try to get my meds when they run out and I have no more refills. I'm on my 5th doctor with them since last Nov. so I feel like I don't have a doctor, at least not a regular one. Before my doctor retired I had him since the 70's! I loved him! He was one of those old fashioned doctors that you could call when you got sick and he would take you in that day. He did a lot of things by hand. I can't wait until I can feel better!

Make sure you take the whole cycle of antibiotics even if you start feeling better! Glad you've gotten it figured out.

I'm out of the antibiotics as of yesterday. I still don't feel 100% right. In fact, they gave me more antibiotics then I was supposed to get. I was supposed to have enough for 7 days, twice a day. I had 2 extra days of antibiotics! I think I am going to call my Health and Wellness Center and see what they think. Maybe they will make me pee in a cup again. I just want to feel better. If it's something else, like I've gotten old and I need to do lots of Keigals so I'm not always peeing, then I will. I just want to know what's going on. I hate taking antibiotics but at least I have my really strong Probiotic to take until I can get another appointment and then take it after I'm done with another round of antibiotics if that's what I need.

If you're not better, call back. Since you sat with this infection for so long, it's likely to be hard to clear up. Keep on top of it!

As someone who has frequent bladder infections - please, never let them go too long before seeing a doctor. I've ended up in hospital septic many times because a bladder infection can very quickly reach the kidneys and infect them too. If soemthjng doesn't feel right - see a doctor. It doesn't have to burn to be an infection - frequent urination, odour, dark colour, stomach pain and or fever can also be clear indicators!

The only thing I really had was frequent urination. However, I am 61 so I thought it could be my age. I wear ultra thin maxi pads because I have a bleeding hemorrhoid due to 2 different meds years ago. Sometimes the pads smell like ammonia. My urine is dark yellow because of my vitamins and I notice that right after I take them. When I don't, because I have to wait 4 hours after my Thyroid pill to take them, my urine is clear. I never had stomach pain or a fever. That's why I didn't think it could be a UTI but when it didn't clear up, that's when I went to the doctor's. Thanks for the heads up about all the symptoms. I would have gone if I had any of those other symptoms along with the peeing because that would not be normal.
