I saw your post made in 2012, and I have never heard this before. My salsa instructor has always taught to be on the beat of the music and he makes us practice in class. He says that the reason why steps do not work out is because the lead is off the music. You need to alway make sure you hear the one count.

My girlfriend gave me a salsa lesson last night at home. She has been doing it for 12 years and is an expert dancer. She said that the steps in dancing are NOT supposed to be in sync with the beats of the music. Music and dancing steps and patterns are totally unrelated to the musical tempo, she said. I noticed that my salsa instructor in class was doing a basic step that didn't match with the beats of the music, and he told me the same thing. I'm just a musician, not a dancer yet, but I always thought dance steps were supposed to be in sync with music. Otherwise the music would just be background noise and its not really dancing. Any thoughts ?
