Non-traditional wedding venue

We're looking to do a "backyard", less formal wedding. However, we don't have a good backyard for this purpose! We are also considering getting married in the off season/winter. Another plus would be that we could have a little more freedom with our vendors, particularly food (and maybe alcohol, depending on the venue). Any ideas for this type of place? Better yet, an indoor version of a backyard wedding?

I've seen weddings in barns, does anyone near you have a barn that you might be able to rent? This is a link to a google search I did on the subject that might help . . .

Our town has a vintage chapel - apparently you could mail order the building from the Sears catalog in the 1930's, I think it was. Something like $200 to rent the hall for 2 or 3 hours. My husband fell in love with it. Turns out, he was willing to entertain my destination wedding ideas, until he figured out that I was serious. ;) Then, no go. Inexpensive, simple, satisfies the purists that want to see you get married in a church (hi honey! LOLOL...)

When you're planning to get married outside in January, you have to also consider your surroundings. Outside in January in Key West and outside in January in Detroit aren't exactly the same thing. :D :D
