What to wear to first class?

Hi everyone,

I'm 19 and next week will be going to my first ever ballet class :)

I was just wondering what to wear? I won't have time to get a leotard/tights/ballet slippers, and besides, I don't want to get all that stuff until I'm sure I'll stick with it.

Will gym trousers (cropped/full length?) and a vest top be okay? Should I wear ankle socks or bare feet?

Thanks for any replies, sorry if this is a repeated Q!

(btw, the classes are held at a university, not dance studio, so there's no official dress code issued)

Can you get in touch with the instructor and ask them what they prefer?

I run an adult ballet class where I work and I just ask for form fitting clothes so I can see muscles and skeletal form but that is my preference because I don't want people feeling put off before they get into the class.

For really the first time anything that allows you to move well will be okay.
With one exception: I would suggest to get ballet slippers.
The reason is that socks are too slippery while barefoot is too sticky. So no matter if you do socks or barefoot, you will not be able to move as you should/ want.

I gree, you will need soft leather or canvas ballet shoes.
