Just curious what the experience was like for any of you. Have any of you done any amateur dancing in such ballets like Sleeping Beauty, Nutcracker, Swan Lake or any other dances?

Yes I have, many times in Nutcracker and also in other performances of our school. It was always fun to work with all those young people. The only problem I had is that I did not have as much time for all the preparatory work as I do work full time. Next year I was selected to dance some part in our City theatre. I am looking forward to that.

The experience of presenting ballet on stage before an audience and in costume is different from that of attending adult classes; so it is a separate and different branch of ballet.

This is especially true of a story ballet versus an isolated number in a recital lineup of acts.

Not as a dancer, but I have performed "The Nutcracker" in the pit orchestra 64 times playing violin. This was for a regional ballet in a Baltimore, MD suburb which was associated with a ballet school. Sadly the director of the school and the ballet company abruptly moved away. Among all the school-based "Nutcrackers" in the area, this was one of the few companies which used a live orchestra. We used the full score, the one used in symphonic performances, not the adaptation for a much smaller pit orchestra. We, in the orchestra, were very disappointed that the company closed. While we were paid an honorarium, most of the players who were not college students, donated our pay back to the company. Most of our players were also members of the Columbia Orchestra from Columbia, MD, a very high level group I played in at the time.
There appears to be no move to reconstitute the company. Most of us (including me) don't know the whole story of why the dance school director quit. When we started, this was a commercial dance studio which she owned. It then changed to a county sponsored activity housed in a arts center housed in a former elementary school which had a small theater, rehearsal space, art classes, an art gallery and it housed the administrative offices of several local arts groups including our orchestra. One of my best friends conducted the ballet orchestra. During the financial recession we were the only ballet company in the Baltimore-Washington Metro area which used a live orchestra, something noted by dance critics in the local press. These critics actually shamed major professional companies into resuming the use of live orchestras for their productions at the Kennedy Center and other major theaters. We played in local high school auditoriums.

I loved dancing to a live orchestra, but the expense of live music and accompanied rehearsals made many productions loss leaders, even Nutcracker.

I have danced the Mouse king in Nutcracker at schools Christmas show, the only problem was when the mice / soldiers stood on my tail, it was a great experience apart from that.

Just did a recital in which a dozen of us danced the Swan Lake opening themes.100% amateur. Not a complete ballet; just 10 minutes worth.

Yes, but always as a character type. (read non dancing) Young students. If you are not aware, it's about them not adults. Although there are Artistic Directors that can see past this. It isn't that common. Most studios don't really want to "train" adults (as opposed to just taking a class.)They are out there good luck finding them. I have an friend that does bit role at the Kennedy Center. So opportunities can be found. Just not as prevalent as an adult might wish.

I was just asked at my new studio to join the cast of next year's Nutcracker, so I'm hoping I have the time to do it. I'll work hard this year to improve technically, and hopefully get a role with some real ballet in it. The director is looking for more men and boys, so if any of you are in the St. Louis, MO area I can give you the contacts.

I have not and I’m so excited that I will be dancing in my first ballet in June, the spring dance recital I am so excited and I think it will be beautiful because the girls have pretty pink tutus and I will be in white tights and white ballet slippers- i’m so excited I’ve wanted to be in a ballet for years so this will finally be so much fun!! ☺️

I grew up playing sports and my dad with my coach so I never got a chance to take ballet or tell him that that’s what I’ve always wanted to do, he would freak out so it kind of sucks but I take ballet privately without telling my parents :(

I wish people would know and understand that there are guys that like the arts and would like to take ballet but they’re such a stigma about it that they never finally just start, it’s too bad...

Recently I got to play the part of Egeus, the father in A Midsummer’s Night Dream. It was a bit part for me, performing alongside accomplished, post secondary level vocational dancers. The only way to learn how to perform is... to perform. So take any and all opportunities, no matter how big or small, to get up on stage and learn how to follow your cues, make your marks on beat, project into the audience, and all the other skills that arent learned by attending technique classes.
