Can’t dance in even slightly dead shoes anymore

I swear when I was younger I could wear my pointe shoe and until there was nothing left at all, now that doesn’t seem the case.
On Tuesday I was rehearsing and really struggling but my shoes looked okay so I figured it was just down to me not having done much pointe lately and being out of practise, I had my next pair of pointes already (I like to be prepared, the dance shop is far away.) so when I got home I popped them on and tried again and found I could do everything I hadn’t been able to earlier.
Both pairs are the same shoe: bloch serenade but the new ones are extra strong as I broke in the last pair on like one plié.
Why can I not dance when my shoes are only a tiny bit dead when before I always could? I was poor so I had to. I think I’m getting weak with age.
