Uneven platform - experiences with hammering out bumps?

Hi there,

Has anyone experience with hammering out bumps on uneven platforms (I am talking of new, unworn paste shoes)? Of course darning edges or the whole platform is an option, but I have just read an old reply by odile53, and she said she removed the satin, applied a little alcohol or water with a sponge and then hammered out slight bumps with a hammer. That sounds interesting, but will the paste at the platform really reharden after that procedure, esp. after applying water or alcohol (won't that break down the paste and make the platform all squishy and soft in that area)? Or could I apply shellac directly on the canvas of the outside platform to reharden it sufficently? Any practical experience would be great, as I would not like the idea of ruining a new pair of shoes... THANKS!
