Does anyone let the dancers choose their music for competition dances as well as choreograph their own dances? The owner asked me to do a solo for comps and this student is 12 and wants a hip hop dance but also wants to choregraph their own dance. Any advice.

At our dance studio, the dancers choose their music and costumes for solos, but the teachers choreograph the routines. That is what I would suggest doing. This way she feels like she is in control and gets to choose a song she really likes, but you choreograph a winning routine that suits her. The last thing you want is a disappointed dance mom and dancer come competition season when she doesn't do well with her choreography. Remember, you are still the teacher and you have creative control! don't let her tell you what to do.

Good luck!

In my circle, the instructor selects the music, costume, and sets the choreography.
Why?
1. Because students often select music that is over-used.
2. Because the students experience at appropriate costume selection is not as refined as the instructors.
3. Because a competent, experience instructor is a better judge of the art of choreography.
This doesn't mean that the student and parent is not consulted, but the instructor has the final say.
