Lyrical songs for kids
By AlanaBanana
On Sun Aug 15, 2004 10:02 PM
In my opinion, kids under the age of 12 shouldn't be doing lyricals because honestly, who is going to take them seriously. They haven't been through heartbreak or sorrow, they are too young for that. They won't feel the song because they can't relate to it.

My daughter was seven last year and her lyrical dance was to "Friends Around the World". It's a Disney song from the "100 Acres Woods" cd. I thought it was great because it about walking through the woods with pooh and it's just so cute and innocent. My daughter got a lot of compliments for the song being very age appropriate.

While some of these songs are a little "old" for young dancers, and some people dont think young ones "get" lyrical - Mark Wills' "Dont Laugh At Me" does work for them cuz most kids can relate to being bugged at school. Have them listen through the songs a few times before choreographing! Good song suggestions on this thread!
in response to gravity.

Gravity is by the same girl who sings Can You Hear Me. She is a christian Singer. I am not sure of her name but I danced to it last year. I will find out for you asap. I don't think it is appropriate for little kids though. We were in the 15-16 age group.

Baby Mine from Dumbo is cute. The kids can relate because they can think of their parent or guardian singing them this lullaby.

I Turn To You by Christina Aguilera would be a REALLY good one because it is really about her mom, but not everyone would know that. Another good one is Jaci Velasquez - Jesus Is. But if not everyone were of the christian religion that wouldn't work out. Jessica Simpson - Angels might be a good one, too. This song could probably be used for jazz or lyrical but I'm thinking more jazzy.. but PYT - We're Dancing is a good one. It's on the Center Stage soundtrack. Or, Ashlee Simpson - Shadow. It's about how Ashlee felt she was always in her sister Jessica's shadow.

All good songs, here's songs I think are good:
Shadow-Britney Spears
No one but you-Queen(but needs to have gone through right experience)
Lifted-lighthouse family
True Colours-Phil Collins
Wade in the water-Eva Cassidy
Evergreen-Will Young
Soar-Christina Aguilera(age 11+)
The colours of the wind(pocahontas)-??
Whistle down the wind-Tina Arena
Memory-Elaine Paige(age 11+)
My friends did a really beautiful lyrical to Beautiful-Christina Aguilera, it was a trio and they are sisters and really identical they made you really feel it, a good one about bullying.
The voice within-Christina Aguilera and
Nightswimming-REM would both be really good as duets with an older dancer guiding the younger one, telling them a story through the dance.

Sad lyrical song

One Voice by Billy Gilman: Can you imagine that! It is a moving song by itself but if you got in some 9 year olds who could really dance it would be incredable. Disney songs and Once upon a december are good to.

Is it just me or do a few of these songs seem a bit old for younger kids (I'm considering this kids under 10)? Concrete Angel, although a meaningful and beautiful song, seems to be very sad and about wanting to die and child abuse. Personally, if I had a daughter, I wouldn't want them to dance to something like that at the age of 10. Also, Breakaway seems to be more for the teen age group. Kelly Clarkson is wanting to leave her town and find a new life, I would think that most kids just want to be in their home with their family. And then a lot of these are love songs, people don't really experience anything near "true love" until they are usually a teenager. Just those few songs bugged me being in this category. But all the Disney songs and such would be just wonderful, I even like some of them:)
