What a Wonderful World - Celine Dion
Dreams - Diana Degarmo
Dream in Color - Regina Bell
Over the Rainbow
Goodbye My Friend - Linda Ronstadt
Remember Me This Way - Jordan Hill

I have seen younger groups do all of these and they were beautiful.

Kids under 12 doing lyrical en>fr fr>en

I am going to strongly disagree with the comment that kids under 12 shouldn't do lyrical. How about a child that suffers from a life threatening illness and spends weeks every year in hospital? My daughter has probably suffered more heartache than most adults. She performed her first lyrical solo last week and received rave reviews - making many members of the audience very emotional. Sadly, not ever 10 year old has had escaped heartache and their emotions are very raw.

Can someone PLEASE tell me "Concrete Angel" is a good song for kids to dance to? The song is about a child and a woman being abused!!! I'm sorry but unless you've actually lived through a situation like that, how can you possibly dance and tell the story of that song. Especially at such a young age?

"In my opinion, kids under the age of 12 shouldn't be doing lyricals because honestly, who is going to take them seriously. They haven't been through heartbreak or sorrow, they are too young for that. They won't feel the song because they can't relate to it"

IN RESPONSE:

Not all lyricals are about sorrow and heartbreak! I've seen MANY young girls do great lyrical solos. There are many songs out there such as songs about dreaming, and goals, and your mom and dad, or imaging, heros, tons of stuff! Just because you think lyrical it's not all sad and emotional. It can be happy too.

"Will The Sun Ever Shine Again"
Bonnie Raitt, from the Home on the Range soundtrack (If you can believe it!)
It's easy for a child to relate to. I have a seven year old competing it this year, and it's gone very well.

this year for my youngest team i used "little angel of mine" by No Secrets. It worked well because a few older girls were placed on the team... really cute.

and by the way, I really dont know what everyone's beef with lyrical for younger kids is all about. It's a great way to give kids ballet with a little less structure and a little more feeling. I guess it depends on your approach to how you teach it? maybe they're opposed to competition lyrical? i dont know...

i say we should all be aware of lyrics for our kids. songs these days can get a bit unappropriate for all the wrong reasons if you really think about it!

I HIGHLY recommend "The Girl I Mean to Be" from the Secret Garden Soundtrack that tinylildancer suggested. It is so cute and sweet and meaningful and age-appropriate.
