Thank you. That article cleared things up for me. I'm about to take a modern dance class and I never knew what it was. Now I kind of know what it's about.

I can't believe the people who have not heard of modern. Its the basis of movement. I'm glad we're clearing things up.
If you ever decide to get your BA and study dance. It will be almost entirely modern.

It was once explained to me that Modern Dance is an "umbrella" word. Under that umbrella falls many different styles, jazz, hip hop, break dancing, lyrical, contemporory, the styles go on....and continue to involve thanks to todays dancers. Thank-you to all our pioneers and everyone that has inspired us since, and thank-you balletgurl for your history lesson! What a great place to learn.

Whirl,

Lyrical and Hiphop are not related at all to Modern as it is applied in this forum. Please read the sticky at the top of this forum for what modern dance is!

Thanks for you concern balletgurl, I did read the forum thank-you, it refreased my three years of dance history study and as you said at the end, modern dance is currently re-creating itself as it now is in many different styles! he info I passes on about the umbrella was from an ISTD modern examiner in England so take it or leave it, I just believe its an easy explanation.
I've danced Graham technique and Limon and to me there is alot of lyrisism in both....modern is still a modern word and therefore still being used.

Great! That was awesome balletgirl, I feel like i have a much better understanding now....but here's my dilemma. I'm going to be a sophomore in college and I've been dancing for 16 years and I thought I'd done it all until now. Now i realize more and more the gift I have in dance, and I want to share that by getting a dance degree and openning a studio. The only problem is I've NEVER taken modern before and I have an audition for my college transfer which requires a modern audition....if you can give me any kind of advice i will be eternaly greatful...I just started as a member here so any one who could help me would be great....
THANX so much

IT MEANS WHAT FLOWS WITH THE TEMPER AND VIBE OF THAT MOMENT IN SOCIAL TERMS ,NOT ESTABLISHED AS A PERMENENT THING,ALWYES SOMETHING ALSE BECOME AS MODERN AS THAT ,IT ALL DEPENDS UPON OTHER FACTORS OF SURROUNDINGS AT THAT TIME...SUBJECT TO CHANGE AT ANY GIVEN TIME,,,THINK ABOUT IT

I think modern is what happens when people look inside themselves for how to move, rather than outside themselves. Hence we have many techniques named after the individual names of their original creators-- for example, Graham looked inside herself, found movement and called it Graham technique. The fact that she codified it and other people learned it (thereby looking outside themselves at her movement, but obviously finding something new and wonderful that helped them connect with themselves in a deeper way, if they stayed with it) is an outstanding achievement no less modern, even though we now have the "rebellion against the rebellion" techniques which were someone else's answer to Graham. They're modern too. what do y'all think of that? Does anyone know if there any modern styles that are not named after an individual founder? actually mine isn't!! I call it singdancing. ashlandindex.com . . .

thank you balletgurl and ims-- great info!!
i think modern is what happens when people look inside themselves for movement
that's why there are so many techniques named after individual founders.

whoops, I didn't realize this was my second comment, I thought I accidentally erased the first one. oh well.

It's pretty pathetic that the arts have gone so down hill that someone can run on stage, pick their nose, do a cartwheel, and run off, and it's "modern" dance. ANYTHING can be modern dance now. Yeah, this is just one of my pet peeves...it really bothers me. There's no thought put into much of it, it's become.....angering.
