Panic - what would you say the difference is?

My thought is that if a dance was referred to as "modern", it would be specifically be a style of one of the teachers, e.g. Graham, or Cunningham style, etc, following the new rules that were set up by such teachers.
Whereas contemporary could be thought to be either a mixture of such styles, or at least not following any specific rules?
I don't know whether this contradicts Balletgurl's original post though..!

That was a great definition! I do have to agree on the shorter defintion though lol. That would be a lot to say in a passing by conversation. Modern dance has been under recognized, but it is surfacing tramatically. The definition will soon become clear...
Question...

I enjoyed what you wrote about Martha Graham. I am in Canada training at a University and we practice her technique. It is not easy, although many people think because that is the way it looks. The falls, contraction, work of the pelvis is so precise the way she used to teach it. I would love to go to her company in New York and take classes with them. When I am done my school, I would love to learn more about her life, and her inspirations and such. It is nice to know other people appreciate her work, as much as I do.

martha is nice, i like it, though i would have to say that moses pendleton has floored me, on his own and with the works of pilobolus.

i understand martha is a stable, but if you ever get a chance to see pilobolus or get ahold of an interview with moses, please do so.

in response to the question "what is modern dance", an appropriate answer may very well be the question "what isnt modern dance".

ive seen some performances that i never would have imagined could be considered modern dance, but were, so i think it cant be answered

and i do appreciate the history of the style and its origins (so to speak). but ive studied modern dance for years, even on a college level, it is a constantly evolving and fluid form of dance.

to me its like ballet is comparable to latin as it is pretty much a dead language, whereas modern is more like english as it is constantly evolving and growing

but thats just my take on it

Alot of people this year have told me I should give modern classes a try. Are there any special requirements? I'm typicaly a ballet dancer, might it come difficult? What do you usually wear for modern?

Thank goodness someone put this up! :)
My studio is big on modern(we do horton and gram) and many of the studios that compete against us in the modern category never do traditional modern. This is great!

I have studied alot of modern techniques or contemporary techniques as we call them to aviod confusion such as humphrey release and cunningham but some of my favourites although not so much techniques are some of the european such as pina Bauschs works, i am currently writing an essay on whether or nt she discovered contemporary european postmodern dance and so are discussing modern or new dance in germany people such as LAban Wigman and Jooss some very good practitioners to look at to get a bettter look at modern dance outside of the USA or part of UK modren or postmodern dance is not worldwide in its definition!!!

Graham is very technical and kind of hard. However if you embrace it is amazing and very fulfilling.
