I think modern is the kind of the dance that appeared within the last 20-40 years. A friend told me that even the "classical" Indian dance ( have a look at this curious Bharatanatyam video ) is considered as "modern" by many orthodox Bharatanatyam dancers! :O

i do ISTD Modern Theatre is that Modern?
Its all stretching and arms and kicks and turns erm and you can choose between lyrical and jazz arm excercises and imalgamation (sp.)
This is what is says on the website:

****History
Zelia Raye was a dynamic pioneer of dance in the 1920s. Her article Limbering and Stretching, which appeared in the Dancing Times (1927) and her book Rational Limbering, offered a revoltionary approach to dancing. As a result of Raye's ideas the ISTD established the Stage Branch (later to become the Modern Theatre Faculty) in 1932 and invited Zelia Raye to create the first syllabus.*****

Could someone clear this up for me, i'm very confused!

Natalie,

ISTD modern is not this kind of modern. I'm guessing you are form the UK right? I am too.

What we know as Contemporary is what modern is on here.

Hope this clears things up a little for you. xxx

wow that was great!I remember about 2 or 3 years ago at a summer camp in my ballet class we were supposed to bring in a fact about dance. So I used that Isadora Duncan started modern to rebel against ballet. :)

I enjoyed the article. it makes me want to go back to my old books and re-read some things i forgot. i would say, that some of the responses on this topic show that a lot of people who go to dance class don't actually study it. it is true that there is no ONE style of modern dance, i have been in a few classes that could be classified as "weird", but all of them have technique that is unique to the style of modern that is being taught. ballet helps in any kind of dance form as long as it does not get in the way. a good teacher will let you know that. i would say that one thing that sets modern dance apart is that a lot of movements are parallel instead of turned out, or sometimes turned "in". no good dance form is stiff, even classical ballet is flowing. i understand why people would say that modern is free-flowing movement. but now, even ballet has crossed the lines over into modern and it is not what people think it is.
so...just dance!

I haven't ever taken a lyrical or contemporary class, but from what I know Modern dance is more technical. Some of the technical aspects we are working on in my modern class now are eye tracking, reaching with your limbs and distill ends to your outer kinosphere, relaxing tension, weight sharing, and using curling of the feet to jump properly.

Modern dance has been around longer than lyrical or contemporary so there are more technical elements, like ballet.

In the early 1900s two American female dancers, Isadora Duncan and Ruth St. Denis, as well as one German female dancer, Mary Wigman, started to rebel against the rigid constraints of Classical Ballet. Shedding the authoritarian controls surrounding classical ballet technique, costume, and shoes, these early modern dance pioneers focused on creative self-expression rather than on technical virtuosity. Modern dance is a more relaxed, free style of dance in which choreographers use emotions and moods to design their own steps, in contrast to ballet's structured code of steps. It has a deliberate use of gravity, whereas ballet strives to be light and airy.

It's all about self expression. Everything doesn't have to be choreographed. If you mess up, It's okay. Improv it out. Let yourself go, let the message be seen through your movement.
