Hey girls! My school's drill team try-outs are coming up in about a month....but im scared to try-out again! I trie dout last year, and didnt make it b/c i went in really unprepared, but now i want to try-out again, but im scared I won't make it...again. =( . Kicking is really big thing for my drill team, so I was wondering 1) doa ny of you ahve any tips, streches, or hints to help with shoulder or high kicks? 2) do you think i should try-out?

Hey there, well let me tell you something, if you want to try out for drillteam, then do, have faith inyourself that you can do it.You said you have about a month untill tryouts, then in the weeks you have, practice doing high kicks, remember to point your toes, if you cant kick high now, just practice and you will get them. Do stretches, stretch stretch stretch, but at a comfertable pace, you dont wont to pull a muscle, trust me they hurt.What i do is come up with a stretch dance, so you might want to give that a try.Drillteam isnt easy, its a lot of work but it all works out for the best.So go try out give it your best. Also if you know anyone in your drillteam, ask them if they can help out or give you some tips on making the team, it doesnt hurt to ask.

I say try out. I didn't make it my first year and ended up making it the next and officer the year after that. One thing to try is step kicking with weights on your ankles. I am pretty sure a lot of people will tell you it's not safe though. You could hurt yourself if you land wrong. But it makes it easier to kick without them. Create a stretching exercise that you do like everyother day to the same music. It'll put you in a routine of stretching. Especially your splits. Once you have splits, practice stretching over them. Also check to make sure your hips are straight to the front in splits (not slanted to the side).
When it comes to tryouts, practice with a group so that they can help and critique. Also get them to video tape you so you can see your own moves and critique them. For your kicks, remember to keep a straight back at all times. Point your toes and never bend your knee when kicking. Don't Hunch! And in tryouts, always remember to have attitude, open your chest, and lift the chin. Act as if you were the best. As long as you don't get cocky 8-p.
