I've got two.. both are generic tartans. One is pink with a little teal stripe in in as well as a few other colors, and the other is red and green and looks almost like a real tartan but I can't remember the name exactly... I love my cottons. They are wonderfully cool in the summer and really light and flowy.

DD's first aboyne was a worsted cotton/wool mix in a plaid but not a tartan. Now she has the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust tartan which she wears with a royal blue vest. Keep your eyes open for a new vest this year!

I still don't have an aboyne of my own, I think my mom's is considered an actual "tartan print" cotton. I have worn my teacher's old aboyne and it was an actual tartan. For dancing I prefer the actual tartan, for comfort I can see why my mom chose the cotton (also the price :? ) but when I get my own aboyne I think I will go for the "real deal"

I'm updating my reply. I have been wearing a white dress with the Cape Breton tartan plaid. I have recently purchased polyester/viscose fabric in the Campbell/Black Watch tartan in order to make an Aboyne for myself. I'll be keeping the white dress to wear during hot weather and the Cape Breton tartan will be used to make DD's new Aboyne.

MY tartan is a dance tartan from Bent Needle Designs, it's the Dress Blue Ireland and I wear it with a pale green vest. I have to say that we did have to alter it A LOT after we got it, but it looks stunning on stage now!!

Has anyone ever used a brushed cotton? It's heavier, kinda like wool but very soft. I've found a turquoise plaid with a white background that my DD likes and would like to try it. Any comments?

My daughter has a cotton one. I am looking for a pattern for the petticoat and shirt so that we can do this one ourselves. :)

When you are dancing at the Beginner/Novice/Intermediate levels it is acceptable to use material of your choice from a fabric store. Especially if a dancer is not sure if they want to work their way through all the levels and then incurring the cost of tartan. However, once you have reached Premier the current trend has been to select an actual tartan for your aboyne. It definitely makes you "look" like the rest of the competitors and has been this way in Scotland for some time.

I cannot believe that this poll is from 2004 and I had never even voted! I had a plain ol' cotton/poly fabric store Aboyne up until about 3 weeks ago. I'm not used to the weight of the wool yet, but I love it!

I want to make my daughter an aboyne outfit. I found some really cute plaids at the fabric store that are cotton. How do I know if they are ok to use?

It's an actuAl tartan but I don't know the name. Although it looks like skirt and petal edged waistcoat it's a dress with a zip up the back. Very easy to put on and looks the part!
