At most competitions how many steps do you dance in the hornpipe, is it normally 4 or 6? In Scotland its mostly 4 but sometimes at larger festivals its 5.

Usually here it is also 4, although sometimes for a special hornpipe it is 6.

Where I am from it is usually a four step. There may be a six step from one time to another, but it is usually just for a special award.

most of the hornpipes i've competed in are either 5 or six step - i'd sure like to see more 4-steps though :)!

I have only competed doing 4 steps!
I have only done 6 steps twice at competitions, both for dance-offs!

I dont even have a CD that has a 6 step on it. 6 steps would be long!!! Man 4 steps makes my quads hurt so much beaucase im like beating and shuffling all the time in HP.

In class we always do a 4 step, but gerneally i always practice a 5 step at home just incase we have to do it at a comepteion along the way.

I don't think I've ever seen a 6 step danced in Scotland!!
I have seen five a few times, like at the Nationals comp, but 99% of the time it's just a four step we do. :)

I'm from Australia and i've only ever done a 4 step i can't even imagine doing any more than that lol... well done to all of you who do it regularly.. I don't think in the whole of Australia there has been a 5 step or a 6 step hornpipe at a competition, well for a long time anyway..

Some medal tests require an 8 step jig or hornpipe :)

I think the Alma Michigan competition in May usually has a 6-step Hornpipe and a 6-step Jig. Perhaps Highland_QT29 can confirm that? :) I know I've danced them there before a few years back.

I think 6 step jigs are more common than 6 step hornpipes. Although at my teachers competition this weekend there is a 5 step hornpipe for premiers.
