I absolutely adore Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series: The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. He writes with this great blend of sci fi, fantasy, some reality, and a little romance... These have been my favorites since I was 11.

Francesca Lia Block's books are really quirky, and different from anything else I've read yet. She has the most vivid descriptions of any author I know, it seems so very Shangri-LA/West Coast that it takes this east coast girl into another world...her books are beautiful and sinister at the same time.

The Giver by Lois Lowry- makes you think! The companion book, Gathering Blue, is good as well.

I just finished reading it and it has to be my FAVORITE book of all time!
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Books dont usually get me so emotional but I cried and laughed throughout the whole book! I read it in about a week because I could not put it down!

1. The His Dark Materials Trilogy - brilliantly written, with the most original and thought-provoking plot I've ever seen. It's heresy, but still, brilliant.

2. The book quartet by Madeline L'Engle that includes A Wrinkle In Time, A Wind in the Door, Many Waters, and An Acceptable Time. Some of the most emotionally and spiritually charged sci-fi you will ever read.

3. The entire Chronicles of Narnia - these books are so Christ-like...they are amazing. A beautiful picture of Christ is found in The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.

4. The Giver-the best book a teacher has ever assigned me to read.

One of my favourite books that made me cry was "Rilla of Ingleside" by Lucy Maud Montgomery. I haven't really cried over books much since then - which was about four years ago.
