i have seen lord of the dance. a little too many times. that specific studio (i'm not gonna use any names) comes to competition with that dance every single year, and they always get high scores for it. it's so annoying when studios repeat dances. i think repeating a dance once is ok, but when studios do the same dances every single year (like the mentioned studio) it gets sooo annoying.

oh, and ps, during the pointe part of lord of the dance, there were a bunch of little girls in the back that weren't even in pointe shoes. if they are gonna be in that part, they should at least do pointe!

No offense to you if your dances are like this, but I hate dances that are all tricks, kicks and turns. I watched a video on YouTube from Dolce Dance Studio (Leave Your Hat On) and don't get me wrong, they're AMAZING dancers, but all they do is tricks, kicks and turns. Barely any real dancing! Seriously, like every 3 seconds I shouted out "Kick! Turn! Trick!"

I just really think that if you're going to go to a competition, you should do more dancing than turning/tricking/kicking. Tricks are like desserts: When used in moderation, they're amazing. When overused, they get annoying. They're supposed to enhance the dance, not make the dance. Same with turns, though turns are more of an actual "dance move." If you have a few sets of fouettes or pirouettes or a la secondes, that's perfectly fine with me. I especially don't mind this is a dance has DIFFERENT kind of turns, and not just the same ones over and over and over. Kicks depend, but usually too many kicks aren't a good thing. And also, to be honest, it's unfair, because usually those dances are the ones who place higher. Fortunately this year, at Star Systems, they were fair and gave the "true dances" higher placement. Like our dance had a few tricks/extensions, a couple sets of double/triple pirouettes and like 2/3/4 kicks. We placed 3rd overall and got high gold.

I also hate:
*When you can't hear the announcer at awards (almost always because their mics are terrible)
*When a studio enters 50 million dances in a competition/category
*Snobby girls who think their studio is the best one there
*Girls who are TOO nice and look totally fake
*Slippery stages! The slippery stage made me fall and lost us a high gold this year :C
*Little kids who win because they're cuter
*OLDER KIDS IN YOUNGER CATEGORIES! The studios just stick one or two 10/11 year olds (or maybe even younger) in with like 4 14/15 year olds and they're amazing, so they win everything. And half the time the younger kids don't even do the "tricks"!

Thanks for letting me rant :)

This past year I was at a competition and there were about 850 dances in the entire competition. One studio had entered about 450 of those. It was also really annoying because that studio's director's daughter is a famous choreographer for So You Think You Can Dance (canada)ETC. Therefore they won everything! i personally didnt think there dances were too special. Except for this one dance that was actually choreographed by the famous choreographer.

I also dislike when categories are huge! 2 years ago my jazz solo category at a competition had 49 entries. thats just craziness!

I also dont like how some competitions dont have different levels of difficulty. Advanced dancers are put against beginner dancers and that inst fair to anyone because then there is no competition for the advanced dancers and the bigginner dance is always going to lose.

I also hate rude people. Last year in my jazz group on girls top fell down on one half and girl in the audience were yelling "FIX YOUR SHIRT" (the girl was wearing a nude bra)

When people put dances in the wrong categories. (putting one of your 2 tap duets in an different category because you just HAD to do 2 tap duets...)

What about the ubiquitous heel stretches? Since when did a ballet stretch become a dance step?

I was at a competition this past weekend, and this one studio - who had god awful choreography, and not an ounce of technique or performance element - walked away with all golds, some platinums, and the top cash awards. Talk about seriously effed up. I will never go back there again, and I'm honestly considering writing a letter to the director...

I agree with some of the people on here, about opening your mouth and stuff, it's only okay some of the time when it matches the song..otherwise go to a cheer competition..(I have nothing against cheerleaders..i used to be one.)

I more so hate sticky stages...trying to turn on that is a disaster.

I also don't like how young girls wear inappropriate costumes and dance to inappropriate songs and such..

When people leave their trash and stuff everywhere.

I don't know, I don't like a lot of things about competitions, but I love the idea of dancing on stage!

Things that bother me is when people see another dance one year then takes the moves and song from it and use it the next year. It has happened over thirteen times to me.

Many people have already said some things that bother me at competitions as well, but I want to share what bothers me.

One thing that bothers me is when points are taken off for a mistake that wasn't the dancer(s) fault. At a competition this year, our studio had a small group number where four girls would throw one of our dancers into the air during the routine. It just so happens that while they performed the number, the music skipped just as they were throwing the dancer into the air, in which she fell on her butt and got hurt. They were penelized for it and it was the sound person's fault, and that annoyed me because it was an amazing dance!

Other things include girls who change their facial expressions every 10 seconds, little girls in innapropiate clothing, and people from other studios who are rude. If I am backstage I always say "good job" or "good luck" and half of the girls never say anything in return, which makes me angry.

I think some of these things people think are wrong! At one of my compititions one judge said that he wants people to go out of thier comfort zones and dance moves above thier level. But I do agree it is VERY ANNOYING when people do things and then do them slopley!

* Super slippery OR super sticky floors.
* Floors that make it impossible to hear tap sounds.
* Studios that are rude:

*Last year I was at a competition and I saw a dance that had about 15 people in it. We were waiting backstage for our dance and as they got off stage, every single person from that dance wished everyone backstage good luck.
*Yesterday I was at a different competition and we were about to go backstage as another dance was leaving. This other dance had about 8 people in it. Three people wished us good luck. The other 5 gave us dirty looks that pretty much said, "Ew. Get out of my way. I have to get ready for my next dance."

*Dances that are the same people, doing multiple dances that look exactly the same.
*Props that take forever to set up on stage.
*Awards that go on forever. *Cough, Cough, BRAVO, Cough, Cough, STARQUEST*
*Announcers that babel on and on between dancers.
*Announcers during awards that you can't understand.

I hate when a dance teacher does like 8 dances of the same style and it ends up looking like the same moves in a different order every single dance!!!! I also hate when people put cartwheels in dances because cartwheels are not dancing and pretty much everyone can do a cartwheel it just shows that u cant do anything else so u need to put in a cartwheel in!!! we do a cartwheel in one of our group tap dances which kind of stinks but we are doing it while holding a mop which makes it a little harder and we only do one in a big circle so its not as bad as when someone does a plain one in a solo especially when they do multiple like 2 or 3 its AWFUl it ruins the whole dance!!!

I know exactly what you mean about the sticky floors!!!! one time the floor was so sticky during my solo that i was supposed to be doing five pirouette turns but it ended up only being 2 because my foot was getting stuck it was awful!!!!

Funny to see that many things that tick us all off haven't changed in 6 years!

I know!!! Im not allowed to compete untill next year at my dance studio, but Ive been to compitions and I think it can get super annoying when the other dance schools repeat the dances, like, 10 times before they change there routine!

I cannot stand when the judges aren't fair to the dancers.
At a competition, one of our best ballet dancers lost to a girl doing splits on the floor in POINTE shoes!

I also don't like when 1 girl does 10 lyrical solos, then 5 jazz solos, and is (of course) the best one there. If you are good, good for you! Take one or two solos and win high score. But when you enter too many solos like that, you are just bragging to everyone how amazing you are. And you are wasting your money.

I also cannot stand when people register in the wrong age category or level. Please just be honest!!

Lastly, I get so annoyed when anyone (who is a good dancer) storms out of the room because he/she didn't win a title. Get over yourself, please!

I hate revealing/inappropriate costumes. I can understand in a lyrical or modern dance. But no matter the age of the dancer, a tap dance with a bra and booty shorts? Uh...no thanks.

Too much shimmy and shaking. That's not jazz. That's a freshman at prom trying to get attention from senior boys. Sorry. I just don't like it.

~And it's not like I'm an old lady or anything either. Imagine what some of the mothers think....

Bratty dancers. I recently went to a Showstoppers competition. As I was walking in the door, I heard a dancer yelling at her mother, swearing and blaming her for problems with her costumes.

Excessive cheering. Ok. That's not really the problem. The problem is when people decide to scream at the top of their lungs. That's not cheering. That's obnoxious.

Too many props that take ten minutes to set up. Especially when they don't add to the dance at all.

Studios that take up the entire dressing room. At the Showstoppers competition, one studio told us that the high school we were at didn't want things put on the piano. After we moved our things, the same lady put all her daughter's stuff on the piano. They hung up banners with their studio name on it. They even moved our stuff while we were dancing to make room for themselves.

Three year olds made up like...well..."escorts." Yes, dancers need to wear make up but three pounds of eye shadow is a little excessive. Same with eyeliner. A toddler does not need to wear eyeliner. Or a lingerie...

When the announcers mispronounce things. I know they can't exactly help it but it drives me up the wall they can't pronounce the simplest things. :P

Ten minute-long dances. Really? Excessive.

When dancers wear their shoes outside. I know sometimes it's inevitable (I've done it myself in a pinch... :\ ) but dancers should try to avoid it. I don't want to dance in the dirt other people brought in, do you?

I don't really like "supergroups." Where dances have from three year olds to advanced dancers. There's nothing wrong with them, really. I just don't like them.

When there are like three different flapper dances in the tap category. It's no one's fault but it still gets old.

When I hear people ragging on other's dances as they're on stage.

~I know this is a long list, but my studio is rather conservative and a lot of stuff bothers me. :)
Sorry if you or your studio do these things...you're entitled to do what you want...as long as it's legal. ;)

ok so i hate when theres a group of about 15 dancers and they're entered in say the 9-11 age category but only about 5 of them are under 11 years old and the rest are like 16 and older. it drives me crazy! studios put older kids in younger kids dances so that the dance does better and it makes me very mad. why cant you enter in your own age division?!?

soo our studio is really big in acro and we have a lot of acro routines. it drives me crazy when we go to competition and the judges dont even know what theyre talking about and just make up random words and think theyre saying actual gymnastics terms. i understand the judges are dancers and not gymnasts but then they shouldn't offer acro as a category if they dont have judges who know what theyre talking about

im not agreeing or disagreeing with you but at our studio we have a boy and a girl who are the same age and compete against each other in their solos. the girl is by far a better dancer than the boy technically and performance wise, the boy is good too just not as good. most of the times at competitions they boy is 1st or 2nd overall and the girl usually finishes 5th. so that just goes to show that guys have it easier at competitions

it drives me crazy when a little child is an amazing dancer, but obviously doesn't like the sport, and it's more of their parent's dream than theirs.
