My entry for the talent competition is this design:
If I'm allowed to, I would also like to play Chopin's Revolutionary étude on the piano. But if it's too much, that's ok |

I will be doing a monologue focusing on the stereotypes in ballet and an outcome of these stereotypes, bulimia. I would like to thank the many people on this site who helped me write this.
Lights Up
Walks in, looks at the mirrors, studies her self, runs down stage left, and throws up.
Down stage, centre
Here we go again, another night of dressing up and pretending to be someone else. I love it though; I am living every little girls dream. It takes sacrifices but I love the rewards.
Takes shoes out of bag, sits down and puts them on.
I’ve grown as a ballerina, I know I have. My life’s ambition used to become Odette, you know, the perfect swan, but I’ve moved on. Now, I want to make an impression on my audience, I want them to love and envy me. Envy, the world’s one true fault.
Everybody is envious of somebody. Me? I want to be like Barbie. She’s so beautiful, the epitome of perfect.
Looks around
I hate these mirrors, they make me look at myself; study myself, this body, this figure.
I hate feeling like this but my profession calls for it. The perfect ballerina is supposed to be 10% under her ideal body weight - that’s anorexic!
It shouldn’t be like this. But can I change it? People just don’t want to see normal people on the stage. Actors, singers, dancers, we’re all the same. We are the puppets - society is the puppeteers. We are commanded to entertain over and over until they are finished with us. And then discarded and sent back into the unforgiving world of anonymity.
Sitting down
I was at home when they called, ‘don’t bother auditioning’ they said, they meant ‘you’re too fat’, I know they did, they always do.
Getting up, turns to front
Too fat?! I’ll show them
To audience- Stretching and Practicing
They tell me I’m not fat, they tell me I’m normal. Normal, I hate that word. What is normal anyway! Everyone is normal! Normality is nothing, it’s pointless! Ha-ha, pointless, get it? My Pointe shoes are normal. Pink European Satin with long pink ribbons. Beautiful aren’t they? (Takes off shoe and throws it) They are not beautiful! They are ugly and painful and completely useless. Ballet is anything but beautiful. Its gift to us is to make the most difficult and painful steps look easy and graceful. None of it is real!!!
Bulimia was a gift I gave myself; it was a means to an end. The end of my body image problems. Ha! Look at me. I’m a textbook case! Pathetic! The more I eat and throw up, the bigger I get. It wasn’t supposed to be like this! But I don’t care anymore! I’ve given up on what they want me to be. I don’t want their white tutu’s and pink slippers; I’m going to go out there and show them what I can do! I am going to show them what it’s like to be me! They will finally love and envy me for my confidence, my ability, my stage presence.
…But I still hate those mirrors.
Lights Down
