Composition (Part I)
Purpose of composition is to:
-create order
-emphasize the essential
-give meaning
To achieve good composition one should:
-organize elements in the picture to create harmony
-select the best viewpoint
-emphasizing one’s subject by separating it from unimportant details
Guidelines
-simplicity
-perspective
-scale
-lines
-framing
-balance
-mergers
-rule of thirds
Simplicity
-give the subject the most visual attention
-compose so that your reason for the photograph is seen
-make sure your subject doesn't blend with its background
-using uncomplicated backgrounds
-move in closer or step back
-avoid unrelated objects
-physically remove competing objects
Perspective
-look from all angles
-shoot from above for sense of superiority
-shoot from below gives the subject an sense of power
-equality happens at eye-level
-shoot landscape with people in foreground and have the people also look at the view
Scale
-avoid making picture flat
-place object that is familiar in the foreground
-emphasize the size of a key; put a child's hand next to it
Lines
-use diagonal lines or "leading lines" to draw attention
-don't place line is the middle of the photo
-best place for a line is left hand side
-curves softer image than squares/triangles/rectangles
