Okay now, let's not get carried away here with definitions of what a teacher is. I don't agree with much of what 'iluvpink23' has posted here but splitting hairs over who is and who is not a teacher doesn't seem productive. Even when I was teaching 12 classes a week, I still had a second job. To survive solely off of teaching is difficult. Most dance teachers I know have another profession. I taught while taking college courses. I actually took a year off to homeschool my daughter. These days, I teach more yoga than dance, but I am still a dance teacher.
Let's leave it to the mods to decide who is and who is not a teacher.

first of all, I'm a double major, and dance is not just a hobby to me. and second of all, don't you think it looks pretty stupid to say that my profile says that I don't teach, but then you post it and it obviously says that I do teach?
I've been taking 5 classes a week for 5 years at three different studios, don't tell me what dance means to me, you don't even know me.
And yes, in terms of a career, i have to choose a better option than just dance, because I do not want to have to live off a dancer's salary.
I find it very offensive that you say that my teaching is just a hobby. The program itself may be recreational, but I take my job seriously, and I care a lot about every single student.
my whole point is being misconstrued into something it's not. I posted my opinion, i was told it was wrong, and i felt i had a good point. we argued about it. that's it. I still thought it was anal, but that's my opinion.
and for the millionth time, I did not call imadanseur dumb, she says she's been teaching for 16 years, I'm sure she's doing it right and has plenty of good advice to offer.
And she didnt need to post my freakin profile to make her argument.
^thank you for that, most of my dance teachers started teaching in college and needed to have second jobs, it certainly did not mean it was just a hobby to them.

^This is part of the problem. You have called my point dumb and anal and now you are telling someone else their post is stupid. It's hard to take a new person seriously on the boards and believe their profile when they aren't presenting themselves in a way that most people would hope an aspiring teacher and new member to a community normally would. I understand you are frustrated and I don't hold any grudge because I have been on this website long enough to know I can have a heated discussion with someone one place and totally love them up in another forum. It's all good, I like meeting new people and interacting with them, but I think there are other ways to express an opinion without name calling if you want to be welcomed, but if that is what works for you go for it.
I don't think any member of the administrative staff is doubting that you are a teacher or other members who have posted here. Generally we take people at their word until we see evidence that is contrary or have a reason to investigate an account. Some people do get slightly suspicious when a new member makes such a big deal about a rule that has been working very well for the community and is so vocal about it. It makes people wonder why it is an issue if they are indeed a teacher and the rule doesn't affect them AT ALL...unless they are indeed a student that wants to post but can't. So I think that is why some people doubt the validity of certain accounts.
Doesn't really matter because this is the established site rule. If you want it changed you must contact the owner or start a post under the telldance.net forum for an open community discussion to even think about getting this policy changed.
The official policy is this...if you are teaching dance at a rec center, studio, school, or fitness club you are a teacher and can post here. We just ask that people post with common sense and enter threads where they have knowledge and experience. Generally this has not been a big problem nor do I see it being a problem in the future.

Okay, I would like to officially withdraw from this argument. I am sorry if I offended anyone with my opinions. I really did not disagree with the idea of not letting students post on the teacher's forum, I just did not understand how it could be determined whether a person taught or not. I do understand now. I don't spend a lot of time on the internet, so I'm sorry if I don't seem as active as I should be.

Imadanseur, thank you for that, and I think we both have good points honestly. I still hold my opinion as do you, and I think it's great you held a pretty good argument about it, but when someone personally attacks me like that, I'm not gonna sit back and take it. Like I said, I found it very offensive that someone who DOESN'T EVEN KNOW ME TELLS ME HOW SERIOUSLY I TAKE DANCE. And did you even read the post I was responding to???
she told me that my profile didn't say I was a teacher when it clearly did, i'm sorry, but that is stupid. It just doesn't make sense. And for someone to tell me what comes first to me is just irritating, this person has never met me!
I'm with tappergurl, I'm done, obviously no one knows what I was actually talking about in the first place.

by the way, when did I call her post stupid? because that is not what I said. I said posting my profile that says I teach dance and then saying my profile doesn't in fact say I do is stupid. Please read my sentence correctly.

I did read the sentence and you said "it looks pretty stupid" which basically means what she posted looked pretty stupid to you. What she said is stupid in your opinion. While you aren't calling her stupid you basically are saying what she posted in regards to your profile WAS stupid. Saying things are dumb, stupid, and anal could be said 101 different ways if you indeed wanted to integrate yourself into this dance community sound more like a dance educator or even sound more mature. Perhaps...saying something was incorrect, or that you feel the wording in your profile does state that you are a teacher. Using a derogatory term like "stupid" doesn't really do much to elevate the points in the rest of your post or make some members of the community want to include or engage you in the future.
I am sure you are very nice and we are all seeing one small aspect of your personality, everyone is entitled to their opinion, and we don't want a community where everyone agrees with one another, but the way people express their opinion does set an impression of themselves especially when someone is a new member and they haven't posted much advice or helped other members out for years. It's kind of like a first impression thing since that is all people have to go on since we can't all meet in person. It's just not wise to barge into a forum that has existed for a decade and alienate people. I am sure that wasn't your purpose or motive, but I do think that could have happened with some members. I am sorry you don't like this rule and I have given you ways to go about changing it if you so desired. I am sure there will be other rules you won't like too, but the friendships you meet, the moments you share, and the advice you get from other people far out weight the negatives in my opinion.
By the way I love your name...you spell it exactly like I do!

see, that's what bothers me. I had an opinion about a rule, which I do follow, and people just read it completely out of context. I'm fine with the rule, it makes sense, but my opinion was that it's hard to tell who is who on the internet, therefore everyone's thoughts and opinion have somewhat of a validity to them, and everyone just turned that into something it's not. which I know people do a lot, but if they looked back at my original post they'd see I have composed myself quite nicely. I have to admit though, the "not a day over 16" I actually thought was really funny, I enjoyed that. And as far as opinions go, I think people should be passionate about them.
however, I think an "ask a student" board would be convenient, but all in all I just didn't like how people did not read my words correctly.
I have to say the name thing is pretty impressive, I've only ever met one other person who spells their name the same way.
