The advise on here is amazing
BUT TO LET YOU ALL KNOW THAT YOU MUSN'T JUST WORK ONE LEG!
see I have been dancing for 6years now and all I have been doing when I do a backcatch is perfecting one leg this puts alot of strain onto your back muscles and spine, atm I am currently off dancing for 6weeks but I have already done 3weeks I have had mri scans exays all sorts as they thought I had a bent spine.. this is all caused through working one side of my body.. when I get back to dancing which is in may my back should be fully healed as I have fractures in my spine and a bruised spine.. when I get back I am intending to work both legs..
please take this advise carefully as my sergery doctor has imformed me that if I hadnt of noticed them quick enough I could of had a majure accident which could of left me paralized in a wheel chair.. he has also told me that lots of dancers get this.. so to avoid it use groovytwins advise but do it to the otherleg..
saves all the problems I have got and im only 14 lol
will be back up and ready to dance in no time..
its killing me not being able to dance :)

love holly xxxx

hello
this advice is great and works really well
I can do a backcatch sometimes
another great tip is to put on leg up one side of a doorframe and walk your hands up the other. Eventually you will be able to grab your foot! x

Great Advice. Gonna try that with my daughter Holly. She is quite flexible but just needs an extra push to get the back catch. So thanks.

Great advice! Thanks a lot! :D

I'm from Sweden and I'm a disco dancer too, but Swedish disco is very different from disco in the UK. For example, I've never seen anyone do a back catch in a competition, imagine that ;) So now I'm planning on being the first Swedish disco dancer to do back catches! I already have both my side splits (almooost), but my back isn't flexible at all. I'm gonna start doing these exercises every day, and hopefully I will be able to do it one day! But right now it's like 10 inches/25 cm between my foot and my hand... haha :P

My four year old daughter is desperate to do a back catch since all the older girls are practicing theirs. I suppose it's never too early for flexibility, she can only try, thanks for the advice!

This post has some really great advice, its really helpfull !!

i also got told that if you go into a hallway where the walls are quite close together , do the splits up against the wall ( the foot that is going up the wall needs to be the one you are going to catch!) and then walk your arms up the other wall and see how far you can go , do this everyday and then try and see if you can put your arms back to reach your leg !!

There's loads of great advice on here!
I'm going to try the one in the door frame cus that sound like quite a good idea
I can't quite do it with the tie from a dressing gown because when I do it my leg doesn't go anywhere !?!?
Also when I hold my foot, the shape seems quite flat and doesn't really make a circular shape if that makes any sense?!? How can I improve and what is it that needs to become more flexible for me to get it looking better?
