(1)my advice is ether sit in splits and lean back and try and get as close to your leg as possible

(2)Get a scarf and tie it to your leg and pull it up

(3) Get a chair and stand so your back is facing the wall and lean against the chair and pull your leg up so your doing splits on the wall and lean back

i cant do the splits very well but can sum how do a back catch quite good..... weird but true!!!

hope my advice helps thanks katiie -x

To do a good back catch requires very good flexibility in the back and splits and you need to progress as follows:

1. get down square in splits and when you can do that with ease -

2. get down into slight over splits (6 inches-15cm) and when able to do this and sit in comfort -

3. in the oversplits do backbends with head brushing rear thigh and when this is easy -

4. on your front on the floor do an overhead split to get the feel of the position and movement then -

5. stand and do the back catch with straight leg.

the way i learned how to do my back catch was lying down on the floor on your front and pulling my leg up 2 my head, and then lying on your front ( balancing on your elbows ) and jus flick your leg forwards, tryin to kick your head, this helps as it then when you stand up, your legs goes closer to your head and then makes it easier to catch x

Oh Dear!

I am sure that you are making great progress and from your comments you certainly do not lack enthuseasm!

But, when you have relatively young trainees a good trainer will go to great pains to ensure that the homework series of exercises given will not only give flexibility but will increase muscle tone.

Youngsters are so eager to increase flexibility (and do so with ease!) but a very definite effort must be made to get the muscles stronger and thus, control these flexy joints. This is done by multiple repetitions that tend to be a bore for the young ones!
