I currently instruct Creative Movement to 3 to 5 year olds. I have been approached to teach to elementary ages. Does anyone have ideas to teach to a large group of K-6 children? 2 Replies to Creative Movement for elementary ages |

Hi there CM Teacher
I teach a group of 90 primary aged students at a school in Australia. These students have had no previous dance experience, except for a limited few, and we have been working together for a year! Now these kids are way groovy and love to dance and be involved in movement!
I was also daunted at first, but as a high school dance teacher I always start a unit with a theme or idea to base all my movements and ideas from!
One such theme was that of "Space" or Geometry, not my favourite thing as a dancer, and a difficult thing for many students to understand, however, through dance and creative movement, i had students who have very very very low literacy and numeracy skills able to tell me what the different angles and shapes where! this was a great breakthrough!
we played lots of games and developed our movements from these games. one such game called right angle, straight angle acute angle and obtuse angle (played very very much like knights, mounts and cavaliers...) gave us a base to expand our movents and make sequences and shapes and linking steps.
Hope that this has been of some help to you!
Please feel free to contact me, i can send you some work programs and/or lesson ideas from my school in a few weeks when i'm off summer break!
have a groovy day! |
