Hello. Ive had quite alot of people ask me how I edit backgrounds for contests and pictures etc and i decided to post a "little" tutorial on how to use GIMP which you can download from PC world.com. It is the free alternative for Photoshop.

GIMP does take a bit of getting used to so it does need practise. but heres a little help on how all the tools work, then i will go on to how to edit a background.

Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/sarahuk2002/gimptools.jpg'

Editing A Background

So you have found an image from the net that you want to use as the background on your pic, right first thing to do is save that picture to your computer and open your GIMP.

Once you have opened GIMP go to file and open and select the picture that you want as your background.

Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/sarahuk2002/print1.jpg'
Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/sarahuk2002/print2.jpg'
Once you have your background open then open the pic that you want to put onto the background, again have this saved on your PC.
Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/sarahuk2002/print4.jpg'

Once the background image and the image you want to put onto that is open you can begin to cut round the picture using the Intelligent Scissors tool.
Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/sarahuk2002/print5.jpg'
Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/sarahuk2002/print6.jpg'

Now these scissors can be quite tricky, you dont need to drag them you just need to click on and off them as you go round but make sure that you do land on the spot that you started or they will keep going! once you have done that you click in the centre of your image and it will select the bit that you cut round and its ready for cut and paste.

Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/sarahuk2002/print7.jpg'

Then you can go to edit and cut in the menu, click onto the background image and paste it in to the image. If you need to resize the image becuase its too big you can use the scale tool, click on the Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/sarahuk2002/print11.jpg' in the GIMP menu
Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/sarahuk2002/print10.jpg'

you can manually type in the size you want or the easier option is just to click on the image and do it yourself then click scale
Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/sarahuk2002/print12.jpg'
then you can move your image to where you want it. using the move tool
Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/sarahuk2002/print13.jpg'

Adding A Bit Of Sparkle

to add some extras to your picture you can use the supernova, this is my favorite tool, you might notice that i use it on everything.
Its really handy for putting behind your text.

go to filters lighting effects and supernova.
Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/sarahuk2002/print14.jpg'
once you have opened supernova you can move it in there to where you want it and the size you want also you can change the colour.
Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/sarahuk2002/print15.jpg'
Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/sarahuk2002/print16.jpg'
Once you have put your supernova into the picture you can add your text over the top if you want to add text.

Adding Text

Click on the T tool in the GIMP menu type in the text you want and then double click the T to edit the size, font and colour.
Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/sarahuk2002/print17.jpg'

Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/sarahuk2002/print18.jpg'

You can use the move tool in the menu to put your text in place.

Once you have done all that your image is completed, there is loads of other tools to play around with this is just a simple example.

Saving Your Image
when you save your image make sure you save it as a JPEG or GIF because you wont be able to host it on this wonderful site!

It will ask you to export your photo always click yes when you see this box
Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/sarahuk2002/print20.jpg'
and its also best not to edit the settings in the box below as it makes your image blur! Just click ok
Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/sarahuk2002/print21.jpg'

You can PM me if you have any questions if you wish! i hope this helps you more than my rushed PMs recently!

Remember this program can be frustrating but you just need to keep practising, im still learning myself and its been months now! don't give up!

Love
Sarah xXx

This sounds quite interesting, but where do you get that programme? And how do you avoid those obvious "editing lines"?

If you type in google, 'GIMP' and 'pcworld.com' it should come up where to download.

the obvious editing lines i have trouble with, sometimes its really obvious sometimes its not, but you can airbrush the edges and just basically play around with the tools to see what you can do, you can blur the edges too!

I find that using darker backrounds make it easier to edit and make the background look more like its supposed to be there if you know what i mean, its much easier to air brush around on a background which is a normal block of colour than a gradient!
hope this helps you balletchick!

In Photoshop, there's a way to "feather" your selection so the cut is gradual rather than abrupt. This feature should be available in the GIMP as well (sorry, I'm mostly a Photoshopper).

Also, to get nearly perfect selections, most pros use the pen tool to make their selection. It's more tricky to learn, but gives much better results than most other selection techniques. You should be able to feather your pen selections as well.

Nice tutorial! I'll have to find a place to put these to make them more easily accessible. We have quite a few budding graphic artists here! :D

The PC world will only give you an FTP site and then you have to follow up with ghost scripts. If you are not familiar with FTP or ghost scripts , you can go to the GIMP windows install at the following link :

gimp-win.sourceforge.net Make sure you click on the HTTP link NOT the ftp. :D

If I had a top ten list - KID YOU WOULD BE ON IT!

This is a fun little program. KARMA For some really neat back grounds check out this place. www.purpleglitter.com . . .

I actually downloaded the zip files from PC world, perhaps they have changed it.

Try typing in the program you need in google and find somewhere to download it. It might just mean updating your pc! have you got xp service pack 2?

Thats becuase, once you have selected the whole image you need to click in the centre of the picture so you get a moving dotted line around the outside of where you have set the scissors. Quite tricky but you will get there!

Hope this helps
