I agree with MrEd!
There is a big difference between what I call "Broadway" Tap and "Rhythm" Tap. Don't get me wrong; I think they're both wonderful, but I prefer to teach rhythm tap. In rhythm tap you're very often dancing with your whole foot on the floor not on the balls of the feet. I find dancing solely on the balls of the feet (no pun intended!) somewhat limiting in the different kinds of sounds and accents, as well as the rhythms you can make. There are some steps which require you be in a sort of demi-pointe or releve position with your feet, but certainly not always.

Regardless, tap is great!!

and another thing... when the teacher says 'let me demenstrate' most likely students will join in too, if you dont get the step, dont be afraid to ask the teacher to demnstrait for you... another thing... DONT TALK, that is the worst thing you can do when you teacher turns on music or when your class mates are going accross the floor.

heyy thanks for posting this! i'm starting tap and jazz in september to help me with my musical theatre dance skills (this is the kind with sctual singing involved) and also because i fell in love with the dance while i was walking around my ballet studio. i remember taking tap in the first grade (i'm 14 now) and i was bored as hell with it, but i think it will be so much more fun now that i'm older, eve though i wish i had more years of experience with me. i am soooooo exited but i have t wait a whole summer before i start! i think i'll buy the shoes and wear them around the house and pretend i'm ruthie henshall, chicago's original roxie hart ;)

Great advice. I only just restarted tap after stopping it 8 years ago. Now I know what my teachers mean by tapping on my toes.

Thanks for the link, Rod, it was fantastic. I've been watching your video's on YouTube for the past couple of days and picking up all sorts of interesting things! Love the Garage Tap 'E-zine' too.

Please keep going with it and I'm dying to see the dictionary when you get it back up and running!
