So? What do you prefer? I prefer a mix, it really pulls everything highland is about together, and makes it look awesome.

By the way, I'm the first to post here. Aren't I just simply miraculous?

And I'd like to thank Maggie for the board. :)

i do like mixes, but my favourites are mainly nationals. they seem to be more balletic and soft, which is sometimes a nice contrast. I prefer this style on myself.

It all depends on the dancers I'm making a choreography for. If they are fairly inexperienced, or if it's a combined group from more schools, or if I have little time, I usually just put existing dancing to new music. If I have time and good dancers, I like to focus on one style, or do an intricate new routine.

Personally I don't see why you'd limit yourself to the confines of purely highland dancing type movements. I love to incorperate bits of irish stage and jazz into a choreography. regardless of the feeling your going for or level of the dancers I think it makes the dance more entertaining and enjoyable for the average spectator. plus its more fun hahaha One time I remember my teacher incorperated tai-bo into a choreography. She claimed it was a modern interpritation of battleing clans, though we all just called it the fight dance. We took it to interprov back in 2002, the traditionalists looked at us like we were nuts hahah

Holy man. I went away on Tuesday for a competition, and now (6 days later), I had 78 emails in my inbox. :O And basically all of it is webmaster@dance.net! Wow, this is going to take forever to sort through... And I have loads of homework. Oh well! Haha, anyways....

I agree ^ I like to mix in jazz, ballet, etc... Though I've never done a choreography, I'm doing one next year, and hope to make it more nationals/balletic, because I want to concentrate on lyrical things...

Do these dancers take the other kinds of dancing. My daughter only takes highland so she would not be able to add say Irish stepdancing, ballet or jazz???

Mix it to the max!!!

I did a fusion of Highland/National and Middle eastern for a choerography last month.

It was a Middle Eastern base (IE belly dance, mor eAmerican tribal Style) with a veil- and teh national steps added some great movements.

Then when teh tempoe stopped and kicked up for a full on belly lock and pop, I added Highland influenced steps, threw the veil and hit it!!!

I prefer mixed because it provides a great variety and makes the dance more fun to watch. I don't like when the dances have an excess of ballet movements. Personally I like a mixture of Highland with a little Irish.

Best of Luck!

I'm not a ballet person, so I like choreographies that are mostly highland, but some hornpipe too for fun. I definitely include nationals movements in my choreographies, but they're still upbeat.

I've done three choreographies now, and I've used a mix for all of them with good results. I like to use some step for sure, and I tend to use a lot of lyrical and ballet movements as well. Choreographies shouldn't be all highland, in my opinion...it's our time to be creative and we shouldn't feel like we have to conform to the normal, traditional stuff. I've never done a flowy, pretty choreography...but that's just my opinion :P

My friend and I have recently been choreographing dances to perform with a ceilidh band we know. The first dance we made up includes movements from EVERY highland dance except village maid, swords, hielan laddie and earl of errol, so got a huge mixture of moves, and we received a huge amount of praise for it...and it is also a lot of fun to dance. We are now trying to teach ourselves a small amount of irish dancing to mix in with highland for our next dance.
