Hi
I'm completely new to the whole "yoga" vs.. "pilates" thing. so i would like to know, what is the difference between the two? I want to take whichever one will help my gain flexabilty. i mean,a LOT if flexability. i can't roll outta my straddle into a frog stretch! my straddle is a pitiful 95 degree angle and i stretch every morning with warming up and everything! so can you all help me please??

I've only done pilates but I really enjoy it. So I guess I could be classed as a pilates girl.

I started Pilates when I was abroad last year. They offered both pilates and yoga at the university but I heard so many positive things about pilates that I decided to do only pilates. I have to admit- I hated it! The instructor was overcautious and breathing was most important to her. After I almost fainted twice during a lesson I gave it up.

Back at home I found out that they also do pilates in my gym. So I decided to give it a second chance. Well, classes here are absolutely different and very effective right from the beginning.

So to be nice and short: I´m a pilates fan by now!

Pilates, especially dynamic equipment based exercises is much more dance specific than yoga which is too static for most forms of dance

Yoga mostly, because it clears my head completely - but pilates is amazing for toning

my local gym offers a special class called "Yogalates" which basically combines them. we do pilates exercises and use yoga poses to transition between the exercises.

Both! Yoga helps flexibility and can be relaxing...pilates makes my core feel strong and is a great workout!

I believe that both are very helpful. Yoga helps a bit more with flexibility and breathing while Pilates is more strength and conditioning. So, they both have benefits!

I've had a few yoga classes and done a lot of yoga videos. I've never had an official Pilates class but have had classes that incorporated Pilates and ditto on tapes incorporating Pilates.

So I'm not an expert on either but can say I've gotten a lot out of both. I think a lot depends on the instructor, both live and video. When you find an instructor whose approach just clicks with you and who can lead you to more perfect levels, then you'll do well regardless of the method involved.

If I HAD to choose just one or the other I'd choose yoga because I find it broader, encompassing physical strength & flexibility PLUS mental control and relaxation.
