Definition of a battle!!! (karma: 4)

It is abundantly clear that the definition of a battle is needed.

A battle (in hip-hop)- is when two (or it can be more) opponents, either MC's, DJs or dancers, go against one another to determine who is the best (or better of the two).

Battles can happen spontaneously in a cypher, they can be planned, or they can occur for an event (a tournement style event).

ESPECIALLY in dance, there are rules to battling like, no touching, no biting (copying moves), and there shouldnt be routines (unless otherwise specified).

The topic of fantasy battles (like celebrity vs. celebrity) should never really be discussed only because no one really knows what the two can bring to the table (and the fact that most of their dancing is choreographed, you can only really decide on who is the better of the two at following choreography). In theend it is pointless and mere opinion on who would win.

One last note- particularly in dance battles... when it's supposed to be a popping battle, you should be POPPING... no bboying, no party dancing...etc... It goes the same for any other type of battle... mixing of styles should not take place.

Any one else feel free to add any comments.

common sense, but copying a move is not whack. it can be done to make fun of an opponent, but only in a joking kinda matter. not actually copying it and then using it as if you were supposed to get props for it, and a street battle is a street battle, there are no rules on style, but there still is a code of conduct. if your in the club or outside, any style goes obviously, but yeah, dont go to a bboy battle and start housin.

I've personally seen some housers that can hang with bboys... and even beat them.

As for the biting... I'm not talking about imitating and mocking a move your opponent just did... I'm talking about biting other people's moves (particularly signiature moves...).

Something like the Wiggles Walk, or something that Bionic Man does (he has many signiature moves)... or the Re-run (it is a specific move that Fred Berry AKA Mr. Penguin AKA Re-Run (on the tv show "What's Happenin'") it was a move he did WHILE locking, but it wasn't the style OF locking, as most mistake the Re-run with locking).

bendingthulife-
let the DJ pick the song!!! You shouldn't go into a battle with a certain song you want someone to play for you...

LilRico3-
I hate routines. LOL. That's just me. If it's a battle, you shouldn't be using routines. Why? In a battle you are supposed to show how well you can DANCE. Doing something choreographed is not actually dancing.

to me dancing is dancing is dancing... if small sets of routines are your style then go for it. but the challenge is dancing to the music that's all. so if you got a routine you'd better hope it fits the music perfectly.
Dancing is dancing is dancing

Alright...
"In a battle you are supposed to show how well you can DANCE. Doing something choreographed is not actually dancing."

Invent...is this statement above your own personal opinion? Or do you really believe this is a fact?
It's not a crime...or is it?

Edited by brikini21 (133987) on 2005-08-12 15:52:56 improper grammar....needed question mark...hee hee
And...

"to me dancing is dancing is dancing..."

ya, iHOP I agree with you...if it is your style to do bits of stuff you've already prepared...power to ya...but it still better be good.

This topic here reminds me of the justice system and how crimes are often judged on whether or not they are "premeditated". Can we judge battles based on this criteria as well? Is it a worse judgement if your moves are determined to be premeditated?

Hmmmmmm....

What makes you an authority or expert for that matter? I mean I have seen you dance and you certainly don't dance like an expert on anything.
