Getting ready:
- Where are you from? Oklahoma

- How old are you? 16 (15 at the time of the intensive)

- How long have you danced? I was in pre-ballet when I was 5, but I started my actual serious training at like 11-12

- What types of dances do you study? Ballet, and some modern and occasionally hip hop.

- Where did you go? (include state, province, country, etc.) ABT Detroit in Detroit, Michigan, USA

- Had you ever been to this city, state, province, or country before? It was my first time in Detroit

- How did you get there? We drove there

- Have you ever been to an intensive before? Have you been to THIS program before? I've been going to intensive since I was 11 but I had never been to ABT Detroit before.

- How long did you go for? It was 4 weeks.

- What were your daily classes? We had a ballet technique class and a pointe class (or partnering, depending on the day) in the morning, then in the afternoon we had two other classes out of the following: Choreography (working on it for the end performance), Rep, Yoga, Pilates, Modern, Hip Hop, or Character. Normally 1 of those 2 classes was rep or choreography. On Saturdays we would have 2 classes out of the following: Yoga, Pilates, History of Dance, Music, Nutrition, or Acting.

- Did you study primarily ballet or other disciplines too? It was definitely primarily ballet, but we did do some other types of dance.

- Did you have a dress code? Solid colored leotards, pink tights, and most of the time they let you wear skirts for pointe. And you had a nametag.

- Did you pack enough pointe shoes? I would have liked 5 pairs and I brought 4...

- Did you know anyone? Yes, two of my friends from my conservatory went and one roomed with me. I also knew another girl from another intensive that went as well.

If you lived there:
- Did you live in dorms or with a host family? Dorms.

- Did you have to travel far from the dorm to get to class? It was walking distance to the main studios, but a couple times a week you have classes at the Detroit Opera House, and you travel there by bus in the morning and stay there until dinner (lunch is provided there).

- What was your roommate like? She was a good friend from my conservatory :)

- Were you allowed to have a computer? Yeah.

- Did you pack wisely in retrospect? Yep!

- Did you make any new friends? Lots and lots! The people there were so awesome!

- Did you decorate your room? Yes indeed! They also had a door decorating contest there!

- What was the best thing about living in the dorms or away from home? I really liked getting to know everyone there and becoming a family with the group :)

- What was your favorite dorm activity or recreational activity (theatre, baseball games, shopping)? Well, we went to a beach one weekend, a huge mall (which had a movie theatre in it) another weekend, and we went to see High School Musical live another weekend... we also tye dyed stuff... I really liked the mall cause we got to see a movie if we wanted to! The beach was cold!

- What was your least favorite residence hall rule? I thought they should have extended the curfew on Friday nights since class wasn't as early Saturday mornings, but it was still fine.

- How was the food? Not bad at all. The cafeteria was pretty big and it had a nice selection of stuff. Of course there were unhealthy foods, but as long as you made the right choices it was great.

- Were you homesick? Not all that much, actually.

- Describe some of your fun/crazy non-dancing times with new friends. We had a birthday party sleepover one Saturday night in one of the lounges, and it was SO fun! Any night we would just hang out in the hallways talking and taking pictures was fun... the chaperones were great, and the overall atmosphere was great!

Class:
- Did you struggle with adjusting to the new studio and faculty? Not really.

- Was this a different method of ballet than you're accustomed to? Only slightly, not too much.

- What was the best advice you received? That's a tough question... I think it's great that the mail you an evaluation of your technique with specific things you need to work on.

- How are the classes/teaching styles different from your regular classes? They like very high passes, about the knee. Also, it seems like with pirouettes, triple is the new double, so get ready!

- What are some new things you have to work on? Nothing extremely new, just deeper technique.

- What triumphs did you have? I think my endurance got much better, and I learned how to make the best of a difficult class and be attentive to all the teachers. I also learned how to channel my energy.

- Were there special guest teachers? Orlando Molina from the Orlando ballet was there, and he was awesome!!!! :D

- Did you try anything totally new, like partnering? Yes, I had never had partnering before. It was a new experience, but alot of the stuff we learned in the beginning was for the boys, so it wasn't too difficult at first.

- Did you get an injury? Naw, but my achilles tendons bothered me a bit. But that was just from dancing alot and doing alot of pointe work and rehearsing.

- Describe your favorite teacher. Melissa Allen always gave very good corrections and I loved her sarcastic personality! Alaine Haubert makes your work very deeply in your technique, and I LOVED that. Alot like my teacher at home!

- Were there any dance-related lectures or movies shown in the evenings? On the weekends we had seminar class typed stuff.

Performance:
- Was there a show at the end? Yep!

- What was your piece like? Each level did 2 pieces, 1 rep, 1 choreography. Our rep piece was Graduation Ball, and our original Choreography was by Samantha Shelton.

- Did your family and friends come? My mom and dad and teacher came!

Overall:
- What surprised you the most? The dorms were REALLY nice!! I was also surprised that I had to eat more to keep my energy up.

- What disappointed you? Nothing, really.

- What would you do differently if you could? I wouldn't have taken a week off before, cause the placement class was brutal after taking a week off!!

- What is your best memory? I honestly have too many to pick just one!

- What new perspectives do you have on your dancing? It's amazing how many dancers are just as good as me, and want this just as bad as I do.

- Would you do another SI? Yep, I want to go back to ABT Detroit next summer!

- Include anything you think I've forgotten to ask about... Only levels. The levels were (from lowest to highest) Red, Yellow, Blue, Green, and Violet, and I was in Blue.

-Amy-Jo

If you lived there:
- Did you live in dorms or with a host family? Dorms
- Did you have to travel far from the dorm to get to class? No

- Were you allowed to have a computer? No, but a lot of people had them with them and it was fine.
- Did you pack wisely in retrospect? Sure-dove
- Did you make any new friends? Yes
- Did you decorate your room? Not really
- What was the best thing about living in the dorms or away from home? You were kind of on your own
- What was your favorite dorm activity or recreational activity (theatre, baseball games, shopping)? Games
- What was your least favorite residence hall rule? That people were living in the dorms. And that the bathrooms were really dirty. Plus like eleven year old were watching R rated movie, even though that was against the rules, the Dorm supervisor didn't even care.
- How was the food? Unhealthy, pizza, hamburgers. :(
- Were you homesick? Sometimes
- Describe some of your fun/crazy non-dancing times with new friends. I was always happy!

Class:
- Did you struggle with adjusting to the new studio and faculty? YES!
- Was this a different method of ballet than you're accustomed to? No
- What was the best advice you received? Not really advice but the fact that I got asked to come year-round.
- How are the classes/teaching styles different from your regular classes? They were a lot meaner

- What new perspectives do you have on your dancing? More movement
- Would you do another SI? Heck yeah just not the same one

- Include anything you think I've forgotten to ask about...
An the Bossov when you go there and if you are not one of the favorite students you are no thought of as that good of a person/dancer. If don't get a good part in the ballet they are performing then you are not good at all. And they always ask the dancers who get a good part to do everything, demonstrate combinations and most of all they are thought extremely high in the school. Most of the girls will talk behind your back, which is not pleasant when you find out.

Starbucks lover, i'm sorry you didn't have such a great experience at BBT as other's including myself did.
Here's my experience at BBT this past summer (note, i didn't not board)

Getting ready:
- Where are you from? US
- How old are you? 13-16
- How long have you danced? 6 years
- What types of dances do you study? Ballet, Pointe, Partnering, Character, and just starting a bit a modern (love it!)
- Where did you go? (include state, province, country, etc.) Bossov Ballet Theatre, Pittsfield, Maine, US
- Had you ever been to this city, state, province, or country before? Yes
- How did you get there? uhm.. car lol
- Have you ever been to an intensive before? Have you been to THIS program before? YEs
- How long did you go for? 6 weeks
- What were your daily classes? Ballet, Pointe, Character, Stretch, Pilates, Acting, twice we had massage class (lovvved it), and the girls in less advanced level also had make up.
- Did you study primarily ballet or other disciplines too? Mainly ballet, but also some character
- Did you have a dress code? Not much of one, there are some guidelines though.
- Did you pack enough pointe shoes? uhm lol. well i didn't have to pack anything considering my housing arrangements, but i did need to order more than i thought i'd need.
- Did you know anyone? Yes

If you lived there:
- Did you live in dorms or with a host family? My family lol
- Did you have to travel far from the dorm to get to class? No, dorms are right on campus
- What was your roommate like? My "roommates" (i practically lived in the dorm) were great, my besties :)
- Were you allowed to have a computer? They provide computers, and students are discouraged from bringing their own because of possible theft or liability.
- Did you pack wisely in retrospect? n/a
- Did you make any new friends? Yesss :D
- Did you decorate your room? I helped decorate my friends' rooms :)
- What was the best thing about living in the dorms or away from home? N/a
- What was your favorite dorm activity or recreational activity (theatre, baseball games, shopping)? Soccer games outside on front campus with one of our teachers. it was great.
- What was your least favorite residence hall rule? I don't really know since i didn't reside there, but some of the rules tended to be shaky.
- How was the food? Considering the campus was in the process of getting a new caf they did what they could. if you have self controlyou could eat healthy, but there were unhealthy food as well. the new caf is GREAT by the way :)
- Were you homesick? N/a
- Describe some of your fun/crazy non-dancing times with new friends: Dancing in the sun showers (that does include dancing i guess lol), watching so you think you can dance, soccer games, laying in the sun, swinging at the park, 80's day that the little girls had. I had lots :)

Class:
- Did you struggle with adjusting to the new studio and faculty? well they weren't totally new, but the floor was more slippery then usual and that took some getting used to.
- Was this a different method of ballet than you're accustomed to? No
- What was the best advice you received? Oh i got so much, but I think the most helpful was actually not said. It was just the way my teachers taught and rehearsed with me. They showed me that i need to take it slow, relax, and helped me realize my part wasn't going to be great at first.
- How are the classes/teaching styles different from your regular classes? Well two of the teachers i have classes with year-round. but the other two always take adjusting for me. The other two do have favorites, which can be difficult, but as long has i remember to do my best and apply other's corrections i still get a TON from the classes. Also one of the teachers likes to take things very slow, which is hard for me, but its a good challenge.
- What are some new things you have to work on? Keeping my back and knees straight, relaxing and not over working, plie-ing during jumps, and learning to go with the music
- What triumphs did you have? Being able to do 6 pirrouettes 3 times in a row (like i said the floor was slippery), and getting a part that i had really wanted and worked my butt off for.
- Were there special guest teachers? No
- Did you try anything totally new, like partnering? Nope
- Did you get an injury? I had a hip injury and shin splits from before the summer that were bugging me sometimes, but not really.
- Describe your favorite teacher: Vlad. He has so much energy and is very funny, and when you get something right he makes you feel so good about it. the problem is he has favorites so you can't let yourself get discouraged by that.
- Were there any dance-related lectures or movies shown in the evenings? Yes

Performance:
- Was there a show at the end? Yes, Don Q
- What was your piece like? I was Dulcenea. I loved it!! It took a ton of work and helped me grow sooo much as a dancer
- Did your family and friends come? Yes! My siblings were in the show and friends and other family came to watch.

Overall:
- What surprised you the most? How much more i need to improve
- What disappointed you? Some of the non teaching facualty, but i personally think its just who i am as a person, our auras clash. haha.
- What would you do differently if you could? Been more careful with my injuries.
- What is your best memory? OOOH what to pick... well all of the things in the question about non dancing times. And rehearsing at night with Anna and Vlad. that helped me soooo much and it was a blast.
- What new perspectives do you have on your dancing? Well i know more of my weakness for sure. But i also know a little more about what makes my dancing unique.
- Would you do another SI? Yup, and i'm going to BBT again this year. I CAN'T WAIT!

- Include anything you think I've forgotten to ask about...
"An the Bossov when you go there and if you are not one of the favorite students you are no thought of as that good of a person/dancer. If don't get a good part in the ballet they are performing then you are not good at all. And they always ask the dancers who get a good part to do everything, demonstrate combinations and most of all they are thought extremely high in the school. Most of the girls will talk behind your back, which is not pleasant when you find out."

I'm not going to answer the question, but i'm going to give another perspective on what Starbucks lover says above.
Only half of the teachers have favorites, and outside of the class room they have none at all.
You are put in parts they think you will be best in. Not because you're a crappy dancer or the next Zakharova. (Personally... and i shouldn't be saying this... but one of the girls that got kitri defenatly did not get the part because of technique, but becaues she is incapable of dancing in corps because of attitude, and she dances with Spanish flare.)
Also you have to remember, last year there were pros, and a girl who placed in Youth America Grand Prix. Just because you get in doesn't mean there is a huge chance you'll have the lead role. A great dancer is a dancer who puts 110% effort into whatever role she/he is given.
It does not matter who demonstrates. I mean a girl the first day of the SI who was 4 years younger then me and was a level below me demonstrated things and i didn't at all. It was because Natalya knew she needed a confidence boost. The teachers here do things for a dancer's benefit, not out of favor.
Anywhere you go in the ballet world you will know dancers that will talk about you behind your back. A lot of girls in the dance world are prima donna, witches with a "B". lol. There are a lot of sweet girls that don't actually act that way. I'm sorry you couldn't have met some of the sweet ones at BBT.

Where are you from? Illinois
How old are you? 15
How long have you danced? All my life , but seriously for about only 2 years.
What types of dances do you study? ballet mostly, tap, jazz, modern, character.
Where did you go? Tulsa ballet. Pointe to the Future. Tulsa Oklahoma U.S.
Had you ever been there? I had been to Oklahoma my grandparents live there.
How did you get there? Plane.
Had you ever been to an intensive before? Had you ever been to this intensive? NO, and no.
How long did you go for? 3 weeks.(max)
What were your daily classes? Ballet technique, pointe, jazz, character, or modern.
Did you study primarily ballet or other disiplines too? Mostly ballet. But a lot of jazz.
Did you have a dress code? For ballet, black leatards only pinkl tights , flats and pointes. For jazz there wasn't really a dress code just dancy clothes, for character black leo, and long character skirt and shoes.
Did you pack enough pointe shoes? Yes, but once i wore a completly dead pair on accident, then another time a brand new pair that was really hard on me!lol
Did you know anyone? I knew i few girls.
Did you make any new friends? YES! two very sweet friends.
Where you homesick? No not at all. I don't know i don't get homesick.
Describe some of your fun times with friends. Well I don't even rememberso many,we were really just kinda goofy and stupid because at class you had to be you know like proper and what not.
Did you struggle with adjusting to the new facility? No not much, it was a larger room, which made me happy and the floor was great for pointe work, but it was a little rough on flat ballets. I enjoyed the larger school.
Was it a different training, than your taught? Yes it was Vagonava, and I train in Balanchine, but it was fine I didn't have trouble with it and I learned more.
What was the best advice you recieved? Honestly I didn't think they gave enough advice escpessially in ballet. But in jazz the teacher was more caring about our euducation, as where in the ballet class I didn't feel they really cared for me just other students that they preferred. I felt like they just wanted money, however that classes were good, and I improved a lot.
How were the classes different from your regular classes? The bar was sort of similiar and center was okay, but who doesn't prefer their own teacher who they know better.=]
What are some new things you have to work on? Definently needed to concentrate more on turnout.(They pretty much only like 180) and I found out that my extension sucks so ive been working on that and it's not so bad anymore. But one more year and it'll be to where I want it.=]
What triunphs did you have? I can'y remember any. The character teacher loved me she gave me loads of compliments. And I have nice feet on points and I think one of the teacher noticed.lol
Were there special guest teachers? Yes, the character and jazz teachers were guest, and there was a new ballet teacher.
Did you try anything new? Just character. I wanted to do pas, and I got to during my actual school year so Im good now!lol
Did you get an injury? Yes, my knee got screwed up from one of the teacher's who liked forcing turnout. I didn't need surgury and it's a lot better now, but even now a year later, it's still painfull when I develope into my extension. But I have a trainer now and the snapping awkwardness is slowly fading off completly. However now I have a stress fracture and I have and intensive to go to in like 3 weeks, and I don't want to have to take it easy on my foot, but...idk. I hope it doesn't get worse.=[
Describe your favourite teacher. The character teacher because she liked me!lol and the jazz teacher had a great personality.
Were there any dance related lecture in the evening? Not really.
Was there a show at the end? Yes a demonstration. In ballet we just did class in front of them then in character we did a group a dance, same in jazz.etc.My mom came. There was limited seating.
What surprised you the most? Seeing the dancers!heehhe!
What disappointed you the most? The ballet, I was really excited for it and they made me feel like trash. and I love that company there sogood I figured it would be amazing classes.=p
Best memory- my friends.and of course dancing.
Would you do another SI? Definently! Im goin to OCU this year and Im really excited. Next year Im trying out for ABT and Joffery and like as many more I can try out for so I don't have an empty space in my summer!lol=]

- Was this a different method of ballet than you're accustomed to? nope

- What was the best advice you received? hmm that's a tough one...but I'm going to have to say the day Alaine Haubert really showed us how to work our inner thighs at all times so we don't get bulky quads. She also helped us use our inner thighs to turn out to our fullest. This was quite helpful to everyone in our level.
- How are the classes/teaching styles different from your regular classes? Not too much different, but definately a lot stricter and focused. Plus, some of the teachers stop and restart the combonation if there is even one mistake.

Performance:
- Was there a show at the end? yes

- Did your family and friends come? yes

Overall:
- What surprised you the most? How many amazing dancers there are out there that are my age

My daughter attended an intensive in Ostrava, Czech Republic. It was supposed to be a reputable intensive associated with the Prague Ballet. After spending a fortune to get there, it was a TOTAL RIP OFF. They didn't have dance classes as promised. She took one class a day! No pointe work at all! They didn't feed the dancers as promised. The accomodations were horrible. Nothing good to say about the intensive except it is over. Be careful going to foreign programs. They promise the world and deliver nothing. There is no recourse against them worth taking. Just a totally wasted summer!
