I like to wear white socks because it breaks up the navy outfit with the black shoes, the white gives a bit of contrast.
Each to their own I suppose.

At a workshop we had an "ask the Judge" session, where this question was brought up. They both said that they prefer that the socks match the trousers.

Who were the judges at the workshop?

My teacher who is a judge said that he suggests white with navy so that people can show off their foot work and beautiful turnout. So it shows off your feet which is a good thing and makes them stand out on stage.

white socks with navy to show off feet and turn-out is good only if you have perfect feet and outstanding turn-out. I wore navy with navy

Definitely white. It is too hard to see the feet in darker colours, particularly if the stage has a dark background.

haha, good point emmy for when i have seen a white suit its always white socks with them! would be interesting to see them with navy socks though.

I wear white with my navy hornpipe outfit... Ive also seen black and navy, but I think white looks the best.

my teacher who is a judge also says white socks, with either navy or white outfit...it is not the contrast of the white socks with the navy outfit that matters but the contrast of the white socks with the black shoes.

I think its a matter of the judge's presonal opinion.

Thank the lord of highland dance that this question has been addressed. i have been arguing with myself which color to wear because i would hate to be dq'd for something so little as my socks color. this was uber helpful!

i agree with dance_crazy16 with darker socks you dont get to see the foot work as much as you want

My teacher thinks that we should wear white socks when we have got a better idea of the footwork. But everyone has their own opinion. I personally like to wear white.

BUT- (if you have white socks on)
If you make a mistake, the judge is more likely to notice you.

can one wear nylons with the horpipe outfit or does it have to be socks? my feet feel better in nylons in dancing the nationals but forgot to check with my teacher about the horpipe?

I would say white socks to contrast with the black shoes. Even if it were a white hornpipe out fit the black on white of the shoes would make it easier to see the footwork...JMO
