I teach a creative dance class for 3 1/2 - 4 1/2 year olds and we sometimes dance with scarves. Each scarf is a different color and there is usually a struggle among the dancers over who gets what color (everyone seems to want pink!). I'm looking for clever ways to hand out scarves without the yelling, grabbing and arguing that typically ensues. Any ideas that turn this task into something fun would be great!
Thanks in advance! 5 Replies to Handing out scarves in class |

I have the children close their eyes when I hand out the different colored tutus. If they start to complain I just tell them in a firm but gentle way that they get what they get. I had a little girl stand a pout for a few minutes once, but hey you cant always get what you want. |

HAHA! Had the exact same problem in my class! I took the pink one out. No one gets it. I told them its lost. Also, I have them in a bag, make them close their eyes and pick one at a time. Our moto in class is: "you get what you get, and you dont throw a fit!" |

Great idea...and what a simple solution! I tried that approach when I handed out bean bags (also multiple colors) and it worked! Still some complaining about the color, but I just got them busy with the activity at hand. Thanks a bunch! |

I also use the "you get what you get and don't throw a fit" line.
Works well and all my dancers can recite it from memory:)
I think teaching social skills is half the battle with that age and so important. |

The line I use is "You get what you get and you don't get upset!" It rhymes (incase you didn't notice lol) and by this time in the year, all I have to say is "you get what you get" and they usually finish the rest for me! |
