I personally find the underhand serve easier. I'm a tennis player as well, so I should be used to overhead/overhand serves, but I don't know-for volleyball I like underhand better. Seems to me that you have more control over the ball.

Well, I'm aware that more of the advanced volleyball players prefer overhand serves because they're capable of doing it. I'm not exactly a beginner, but let's just say I need some practice.

Here are just some descriptions if you have NO IDEA what I'm talking about:

Underhand Serves- The ball is placed within your nonhitting hand. It would be wiser to step a few paces back past the baseline so you can run on and do it. (This is known as the Serving Area) Put your weight on your back foot. Run forward as you are switching the weight from your back foot to your front foot and swing your arm upward to contact the ball. (your hand should be held in a fist) The ball should contact a little above the wrist.

You don't have to run and do it.

And I was taught to toss the ball a bit and then swing my arm to contact the ball while in the air.

Overhand Serves-Extend your tossing hand and your toss should be maybe 11 inches above. The toss is very important. The heel of your hand should contact the ball, with your wrist very still and arm extended. Hitting arm must swing FASSST as you contact the ball.

Okay, so I know not the best description, but I'm sort of a beginner. I just tried to base some of my knowledge on some tips I read.

Haha funny. We're playin volleyball in gym right now. I absolutely suck at overhand serving AND setting the ball. It's always a bump or underhand serve for me. I have close to zero skill in volleyball.

I personally think that overhand is MUCH easier. I've been serving overhand for about 4 years, and I can't get my underhand serve now! Good luck!

I like Overhand! But that is just because when I serve underhand, I dont have a very good aim! Oh Well!

I get better distance and aim serving overhand.

I do both..i switch it up in games because my underhand has good placement, but my overhand has nore power.

Overhand is a lot easier for me! Actually we HAVE to serve overhand for volleyball! I can't even get the ball over on underhand anymore!lol

Overhand is a lot more accurate for but it never makes it over the net. Underhand is less accurate and always goes over. Does anybody wanna take the time to help me on how to get the ball over by overhand serving.

I'm one the few players (okay, we're not THAT rare) that can server an overhand with absolutelyy ZERO spin. the result is the ball "floats" around in the air, and doesn't fly straight.

Definately underhand! I've perfected my underhand serve and very few people are able to return it, so it works!

I'm ok at both, but my underhand is better. However, I like overhand because they are harder to return. Sometimes I lose concentration and the over hand dosen't work. Underhand is eaiser, but overhand is better.

I have a killer underhand serve. Which is pretty reliable. overhand -- and the ball goes stee----raight into the net. Whap! And everybody boos me.

so, When you're doing the overhand, is the method that you toss the ball up in the air, and then spike it with the open hand?

Would people be willing to describe the overhand serve method?
