im sorry but starting pointe so quickly after just starting ballet is a really bad idea, and if youve been doing other types of dance it might be alright in a year, or more. but in my opinion no matter what in a month your technique wont be strong enough and neither will your ankles.

Great job on putting all of these threads into one. I have been looking through these threads and they are all basicly the same. In other words, if the post is already there, then do not post it again.

I'm 18 and haven't really got any proper dance experience. I'm hoping to start ballet soon as it's really good for posture and general strength. Because I'm 18 will I still be able to ultimately go en pointe? I know that it will take ages to be able to get to that stage, but I'm taking a gap year at the moment and really want to do as much dancing as possible. I'm going to find a dance school in Leicester where I'm going for uni.

hello,
this may sound stupid.. i was not long enough in ballet to know important things about ballet.
So, my question is..when people say "arch", does it mean arch in the upper (that faces the sky) or the lower (that faces the ground) part of foot?

The International Association for Dance Medicine & Science has published a resource paper for teachers and parents entitled When Can I Start Pointe Work? Guidelines for Initiating Pointe Training. This valuable paper is written by an orthopaedist, a physical therapist, and a dance school director.
The paper can be found on the IADMS web site or as downloaded as a PDF.

Superb article!

I met a young lass this evening, with whom I was acquainted both in and out of class, who told me she was going to start pointe work. She was told to get shoes by the teacher, who is very respected.

The girl's only had a couple of months of ballet classes and her technique is certainly NOT sound enough to begin pointe work. Respect for the teacher dropped a big notch, especially as said teacher criticized another school for putting a much older and stronger student on pointe after 9 months of intense training.
