Why Europe? Whats so great about it?
Essentially you can get the same level of teaching in Europe as America. However, Europe is a rich cultural playground and sees the home of many great schools and companies. It is where many styles of ballet originated- RAD in England, Bourneville in Denmark, Vaganova in Russia…and so on. A lot of the folk dance used in ballets such as Coppelia, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker etc originated in Europe, mostly in Hungary and Russia. There are some great schools here, and generally speaking Europe offers a wider age range at its Sis.

So which intensive is for me?
I can’t decide that for you. It depends on all sorts-how far you wish to travel, whether you need accommodation, what level of dance you are at, what other dance forms interest you….etc.

Are any of the intensives particularly hard to get into?
Just as in America, it is a real mix. Particularly high level programmes include the Royal Ballet School England, Theatre Ballet Russia, Bartholin International Ballet Seminar Denmark and The International Ballet Masterclasses in Prague.

More intermediate level courses include Northern Ballet Theatre England, Central Ballet School England, English National Ballet School, Korper Italy and London Studio Centre, England.

Intensives offering a beginners course as well as Intermediate and Advanced sections include AIYF Scotland, Balletakademian Sweeden, Ecole Superiere de Danse de Cannes France, Impulstanz Austria, Laben England, The RAD England, Salzburg Experimental Academy Austria, Scuola del Balletto di Toscana Italy and the Vaganova Ballet Academy, Russia.

Are European intensives expensive?
That depends on all sorts. Each intensive differs in price, and it depends how far you need to travel to the intensive and the type of accommodation. They are no more expensive than American intensives.

Do I need to speak the language of the country the intensive is held at?
It certainly helps! Some programmes it is essential, others use mainly English and ‘ballet-French’. Check with the individual programme.

Have you been on any of the programmes?
I have been on the RAD summer course, the Yorkshire Ballet Seminars, Northern Ballet Theatre SI and Central Ballet School SI. I also have been on a Birmingham Royal Ballet Intensive but I believe they don’t happen any more. I have sent children I teach to Royal Ballet School, Yorkshire Ballet, Northern Ballet Theatre SI, Central Ballet School SI and English National Ballet School SI, so I know a lot about those if you need further information. The rest of the information was collected from the schools websites, and pointe magazine.

I hope you like my guide and it has helped you. Any questions or comments would be great.

There is another Summer school in Holland. Its in The Hague.
It's an established school and it offeres all levels ballet and point classes. There is accomodation - not provided - but they give advice on the B&B Hostels or Hotels.

www.balletschooldenhaag.nl

Also the school that you've given in Amsterdam, I go there for my ballet classes, and I can say that it is a Good school, a bit demanding but only if you want to improve (well, why else would you attend ballet classes, right?)

To the OP,

I don't think Scottish Ballet do a summer course anymore.I have been a Senior Associate there for two years and we always get information handed out about workshops/courses etc. Maybe I'm totally wrong but mI just think I would have heard lol :)
