Yesterday my husband brought home a big roll of the roofing stuff. They were just going to throw it away at work. So I have a piece that's 47' by 6 1/2' that I'm going to tape to a section of the floor in one studio and see how well it works. If it works just like marley floor and is durable over time, it would definitely be worth its cost. I'm so glad somebody already had this thread because this piece of stuff he brought home just came out of the blue, but it seems promising. I'll let you know! We do have a sprung wood floor at the studio, but no covering on it. Just wood that needs desperately to be refinished.
Thanks!

I have a rubber roofing material over one of my floors, and love it. Good luck.

I think we are going to purchase Adagio floor by Rosco for our tap studio. Anyone hate it? Love it? If you have an opinion, please, I beg you, PM me ASAP. This has been over a year-long process trying to choose a floor.

THANKS!

40 mil material  en>fr fr>en

Guys, anything that is 40 mil is very think. Think about this - a normal swimming pool liner is only 20 mils. You can get 27 mils but it costs more for installation and the product. Most pool builders won't put in anything over 27 mil because it is too hard to get it to bend into shape. So this 40 mil stuff must be tough!

(I work summers for my cousins who own a pool store.)

Thanks so much! This is great. I teach at our school - after school - and haven't been able to teach tap because of the floors. I will check into this closer. :0) I just love you guys!

Hi, I am a new member and was wondering exactly what kind of dance you do on the rubber roofing material floor that you have. I'm wanting to do a 2nd room in my studio but the cost is killing me. I'm about ready to go out and buy this roofing stuff but I'm just afraid it won't work well! We do tap, jazz, clogging, hiphop, ballet, pointe, modern, and lyrical at my studio.

Have you done these types of dance on that floor? Is it really as good as the marley? Any downside? How do you install it?

Thank you SO MUCH!

Ok, quick question. My stage director has been waiting anxiously for the responses to this discussion as he is about to put a floor down in my larger classroom and if we can save money.... well ok by me lol. So is this rubber roofing stuff good or not and where the heck do you get it? I'm in Canada folks so any idea where I can here. I called three roofing companies and they laughed at me. Help!

Can I get an update on this thread?
Anyone put one of these alternatives down a month ago?
If so, how's it working?

Thanks.

Just an update folks,
Checked out that rubber roofing stuff; seemed to have a little too much grip for me, and I think the taps would kill it. I would've loved to have something cheaper, but I went ahead and purchased the TimeStep T(the one you can also tap on) from Stagestep.

We installed this on top of our floating subfloor. I'm loving it! (but my pocketbook isn't!)

I saved alot of money on the installation though because I got some guys from a local mission that do volunteer work(you can give donations to the organization)to install the entire floor. Most of the guys are carpenters and the directions were easy to follow. They did an awesome job!

Just to let you guys know.

I currently have scraps of this liner downstairs due to my remodeling project. If you would like I can maybe send you a sample of it....just PM me and ask.

My ballet studio also uses this material.....it works quite nicely I may add.

I have had my "rubber roof floor" for 4 years. It isn't pretty, but it is cheap!.. Our taps haven't killed it, all the scuff marks wash away, ( I use vinegar, or mop and glow) I'll try to post a better picture.

I hope I did this right.

here it is. Now, 4 years is a long time for 150.00. I don't use it every day now (because I have 2 other rooms) but I used to. Yes, we did tap, ballet, jazz, lyrical, beg. pointe, (it turned the pointe shoes black a little)

The one I got was from Wimmsatt. Look in your local yellow pages under roofing materials. It is so heavy that I didn't need to tape it to the floor, it just lays over ply wood.

Good luck.

Wow! That looks great! Thanks so much!

I have one questions though, you said it was heavy, well I am looking to use something occasionally (at a school) so we don't mess up the floors - yet can still tap on it. Would this be too bothersome to store it in a closet and roll it out once a week or so?

The roofing material looks so great! Thanks for all your help and advice on how to care for it.

It is heavy as sin!!!! If you roll it , or fold it up, a 20'x10' is going to weigh about 45lbs... If you have one other person, (my 8 year old helps me) it makes it easy. You can also "drag" it across the floor and it won't tear. I even drug it through the parking lot of my building and used it for a portible stage.

It's not for everybody, but it worked for me. Good luck.
Oh, get a good quality, so that it doesn't make 'black marks' on clothes and shoes.

I checked out the shower liner stuff today at lowes, and it felt slippery on both sides. I think I'll stick with my roof.

Good Luck.

Thanks so very much! I am hoping I can keep it in a closet at the school and drag it out when I need it. Luckily, I have a 13 year old and a 10 year old with me every afternoon that I teach - so maybe we could handle it! :0)

Thanks again for your reply! I really do appreciate all your help!

Hi,

I am opening a new studio in August and have a question about your flooring. Is there enough spring in the rubber to be ok going directly over concrete?

Thanks

Hey DancerLorri! I was just wondering who you were talking about? Whose name? If you are referring to me, my real name is Ginger and I have no man in my life right now - hence the "no Fred." I'm happily divorced and dating stinks - so there you go! :)

But more about this post, I haven't bought anything as of yet. I need something more portable and have yet to find anything that I can use at the elementary school where I teach in the afternoons.

You're probably suffering from shin splints. Any time your legs are use to one type of flooring then you change it will cause shin splints and are very painful. If you go from hard to soft or vice versa you will get them.

But concrete is very detrimental to growing feet and bones in a youth's body. Stress fractures can occur quite easily. I bet if you got an x-ray of your feet and legs your doctor would find evidence of healed stress fractures and depending on how long ago you changed floors current ones.

I just put in a grey Rosco floor called adagio
They said it was recommended to jazz, tap and ballet
It looked great - but after two tap classes it was covered in
black marks. 3 hous of scrubbing on my hands and knees removed only some of the marks. Now it looks horrible. Anybody got any suggestions on an easy and effective way to clean it?

Just got through my first week with the new floor. Thanks to my friends here at dance.net - I made a rasied floor using the sill seal and wood method (see other posts)and on top of that I got the rubber roofing material. It looks and feels like the real deal with only a quarter of the cost of the real thing. It has made it through the first week. Seems like it will be a good deal. Just sending a thank you to everyone who has helped me save a bunch of money that I ofcourse did not have in the first place.

The rubber roof idea sounds good, but for comparison, what would be the best marley surface over a subfloor with price being no object?

AAAHH! This whole flooring thing is driving me nuts. I have been teaching for 18 years and owned my own studio for 5. I need to get new floors and just don't know where to begin. I have read all your posts and am still as clueless! Someone please explain to me what is the best floors for all types of dance. Should you get black, grey (which I have now and hate because it always looks dirty) or wood? Also, do you allow students to enter the classroom with street shoes on?

Thanks everone!!!

This thread is a business saver! I just opened a studio in a TINY town, and I just can't afford to put a marley floor down, it would take two months worth of my studio income! But tomorrow I'm heading to Menards to spend $77 on the roofing matieral for my floor, I'm so excited! Thanks for all the GREAT information!
