Hello,
This is a picture of my scorpion. I've been working on it for like two or three weeks, and this is what I have so far. I really, really want to improve it before tryouts in late April/early May though. Does anyone have any advice/stretches? I think I mainly need to work on my back flexibility... All advice, comments, critiques are wanted! Thanks.

First off you need to make sure that your supporting leg is straight, practice trying to keep your back straighter so that you don't lean forward so much. Both these things will result in you falling forward in a stunt.
Some exercises to help:
Do the splits with your left leg to the front, and then bend your right up towards your head, this one helps with flexibility.
Lay flat on your stomach and practice pulling it while keeping your hips on the surface on which you are laying.
Bridges, and lots of them, walk your hands and feet as close to one another as you can get them.

try not to lean over so much even it sacrafices the stretch a little. If you drop your chest, especially that low, you are lwamost guarenteed to fall when you are in the air, and you definetley don't want that to happen. The way to improve this would be to stretch your back more. Your foot won't be as high right noe if your not all leaned over but stretchign will help that. Good luck! |

i agree with what everyone here has said already. the worst habit you can get into is to lean over! don't sacrifice more extention for leaning over! |

to try out, you will more than likely learn a cheer, a dance, and some jumps, and if your school's squad is very advanced, tumbling could be a requirement. and you may not even stunt at tryouts-and a scorpion isnt necessary (first you would learn an elevator at prep level, then extended level then maybe a liberty...but those are advance stunts) you should ask someone that has arleady tryed out or made the squad to see what you will be evaluated on. |

Thanks for all the advice everyone. No, it's not recquired or anything, mainly I was just setting a goal for myself: "Have a much better scorpian by tryouts" you know? Thanks again for the advice.

P.S. In case you were wondering, tryouts were fine. I was unable to jump due to injury, but two of the three coaches had seen me jump before so it was all good. Also, I made the varsity squads for football and girls basketball! Yay me! Lol. |

hiya i'm from the dancing area on dance.net, we call them back catches, there are loads and loads of posts on the dancing area which will help you, but mainly just sit in splits and lean back as far as you can and keep trying to get your head flat on your leg! That should help. oh and keep praticing!

im also a disco dancer, i would say ensure you are fully warmed up, and strech everyday, and wear something more felxiable other than jeans! good luck with your try outs!
