Okay, so maybe the kids aren't exactly narcissistic. But I am having some SERIOUS issues with my 3-4 year olds staring at themselves in the mirror.

We, of course, do various things across the floor, and one little girl in particular, get so obsessed with herself that in the middle of ballet walks, she'll stop walking forward and start walking towards the mirror to stare closer at herself.

What the heck do I do about this?? I've tried asking them to keep daning, stop staring at yourself, and even danced with them...But nothing seems to be working.

Any advice would be MUCH appreciated.
Susanna

At that age they're just that way. They're old enough to understand what a mirror is used for, and they're curious about it. If you can, turn them away from the mirror. Most three and four year olds don't really have a concept of using the mirror for dance, so it can be a major distraction.

Have you ever thought about covering the mirrors? We do about 6 weeks prior to recital to get them out of the habit, and it curbs the little one's need to stare at themselves!

I don't even have mirrors where I teach. It's recreational, so we don't have an official studio, and I find the kids to be really focused. I'd just suggest covering the mirrors.

We cover mirros at our studio as well. It's really easy. Just get some of those big plastic tarps, with the rings on the edges (for bungee cords), then just hang them on nails. That way it's also really easy to take down after you are done.
