Poms tryouts in 2 weeks....tips and HELP! PLEASE!!! en>fr fr>en By heartdance Comments: 15, member since Thu Apr 13, 2006On Thu Apr 13, 2006 04:43 PM
well my first question is do you think personally matters way more than your actually abiltiy in dance?
ive been dancing for a while but not exactly poms dancing. so i just learned certain pom momvements like doubles, fourtees, and tours (straigh leg fourtees) (sorry about spelling)
and i'm not that great on spinning yet. like I can do a double like 4 times in a row. but after that they get really messy and i get really dizzy. and get "spinned out" i guess you can say.
so i'm really just relying on my "cheerleading background" I have really sharp movements n great jumps. my leaps are ok, my left leg can't get as high as my right, but they're close.
and my switch leaps are...well...not horrible but not good. i can do the right form but my right leg barely gets up there.
n e wayz
i was thinking i could just go in there and be really loud smile as if i was barbie, and the minute i go in there and bounce around a lot.
any other tips?
is there any one who made the team and didn't have the greatest turns in the first place?
love,
me
~thanks~ 6 Replies to tryouts in 2 weeks....tips and HELP! PLEASE!!! | re: tryouts in 2 weeks....tips and HELP! PLEASE!!! en>fr fr>en By dancelover131 Comments: 79, member since Mon Jul 26, 2004On Thu Apr 13, 2006 10:48 PM
Well first of all do you have any tips for straight leg fouettes i've been struggling with them. What stuff did you do to practice for them.
When i tried out for my poms team last year, i only had basicly a solid double. But when they taught us the routine i made up for my technique there. I added personal style to the dance and they seemed to like it. but don't go over board. Usually they look for people who really want to be on the team and are willing to try extra hard. Not quite sure if this answered your question. but if you have any more questions pm me. By the way i did make the varsity squad. good luck | re: tryouts in 2 weeks....tips and HELP! it did.
like i can dance...just my spins...ah...u know?
with straight leg forteas i practiced on the bar just going through the motions. n after doing that for a while i would let go of the bar try doing just one rotation. then next time two and try to keep my balance. and then try them on the floor. and those help. u just have to close ure rib cage a lot,and just pump u know? i can do normal fourteas a lot better. i dont know y, but i think its because i learned them first and i can "pump" my leg in to get myself around.
like idk. this is how cheers get noticed lol. they like cheesy! like when u go onto the audition area, like do a nice little kick and and say some motavating kinda thing...but poms is different...so idk n then like keep your cool when ure done and regain ure composure and start ure dance.
and ya. idk if i should or not. i've been just freaking out | |

It sounds like you ahve a strong foundation already. I don't know how compeitiive your squad is, gbut you'd definitely be a candidate for my dance team. Your cheerfleading background will help a lot. I belong to a DANCE team, so we do forms other than Poms, so some girls made the squad and had the worst arms ever. And it was really frustrating to have to spend so much time teaching them basics...like how to keep your arms straight. | re: tryouts in 2 weeks....tips and HELP! Are you spotting when you turn? Because if you aren't then you won't get more than about 2 turns in- when it comes to pirouettes. As for seconds/tours(sp) spotting and your plee-ay (again i can't spell) will get you around, so be sure to plee-ay at the corner and and then pop up into rel-a-ve, and of course spot. just be sure not to jump your turns around when your doing them, we had a girl just tryout for uor team who did tours and constantly jumped, and they weren't even mandatory- it didn't make for a very good showing.
Like some others said, it's hard to tell you exactly what to do when tryouts come because we don't know what level the team is, but showmanship and energy is a huge part of poms, actually for a comp, you don't even need technique in a pom routine. At our last comp the judges wrote: since technique doesn't count for anything, you should take it out of your routine unless it's flawless. Now we weren't going to take it out, we modified it but, the main emphasis in poms is not technique (again it depends on the team) its arms, power, and energy. So just use what you have to your advantage, good luck! | re: tryouts in 2 weeks....tips and HELP! Actually, where I live, technique is a part of poms. | re: tryouts in 2 weeks....tips and HELP! PLEASE!!! en>fr fr>en By heartdance Comments: 15, member since Thu Apr 13, 2006On Mon Apr 17, 2006 04:02 PM
well i spot, so thats good
i'm trying out for the JV team, and the doubles are pretty mandetory.
do u think if on a couple of my doubles (which would probably be at the end when i start to lose my balance lol) i went on my heal at like the last 3 nano seconds they would take points off? | ReplySendWatch
