MY name is Becky, I'm 25 and I have been teaching for 8 years (that includes assisting)
My first dance recital, I honestly don't remember. That's because I was still in my mom's tummy....and she was out there doing ariel cartwheels!!! My grandmother was a dance teacher, my mom is a dance teacher/SO, and I was bound and determineed all through life that I was NOT going to be a dance teacher. I was an athlete all through junior high, high school, and college. I took dance classes, but hated being known as the teacher's daughter. I have 2 older sisters, but they never had to do all the dumb stuff I had to do! Anyways, I went away to college to play volleyball, and I found myself balling my eyes out every year when I came back for the recital. It was then that I realized that deep down inside, no matter how much I tried to fight it, dancing was my passion. I moved back home after graduation and began teaching again. I taught ballet (which I am not a fan of) tap, and jazz. But I still felt like something was missing. Last year, I started hip hop classes at our studio. Our program is crazy big now. It's a blast, I love every minute of it. And I love all ages. I love the little ones (I went to school to be a preschool teacher, so I guess I really am using my degree) because they are like sponges, sucking up everything you have to teach them. I love the middle aged kids. Although it's a guarantee that at least one of them will cry each week because so-and-so said they didn't like them anymore. But I like them because they're still at the point that nothing embarasses them, they'll get out there and shake it til the cows come home. And I love the older kids, mainly because a lot of them have been around since preschool and It's cool to see them blossom. I also love the older kids because I can give them more difficult steps, which in turn, challenges me to be a better dancer. I love to be challenged. What can I say? I love this business. I love the overwhelming feeling I get when I see a young child dancing with pure joy. I love to see the looks on the little one's faces when they get to put on their costumes. I love to be an example both inside the walls of the studio and out. I love this job! |
