Hello teachers! My name is Erin, (I hope you don't mind me posting in here..I want to see if you guys can help me out!) So here's the story,
I'm trying out for my studio's dance company.. (midwest connection dance company.. of Anita*s Dance Center.. anyone heard of them?) And, as part of our audition we have to make up a routine on our own.. (Timing: a minute to a minute and a half..60 sec.. lol) At first, I thought it was a cool idea to try to mix my own music(being the
music fanatic I am.. i thought I'd give it a try! I asked for advice on this site, got some good advice, but I'm thinking..ya know.. for ONLY a minute to a minute and a half routine.. mixing songs..idk would bee WAY to complicated..(I'm not sure, I'm moreso leaning towards NO..but I'ma asking my friend to help cuz she's really good with computer, and editing films and stuff..so I'm gonna STILL see if it's gonna work but I doubt it.) If you WANT to know what my ideas were for the mixing you can certianly ask me and I'd be more then happy to PM you and tell you!)
But anwayz, that was my orginal idea.. it sounds kinda silly.. but I'll probably just wind up using one song...which is perfectly fine.. I have ideas.. but here's what I want in my solo:
I want it to be a lyrical/jazzy piece.
I want to start off slow (a song with really great emotion and lyrics.) < I know you're probably already thinking.. "find a song that you can relate too.. look on all the music boards on here your BOUND to find something, blah blah blah..)
I KNOW and I HAVE
(I'm NOT trying to sound despirate..)I've just been REALLY stuck..(a chorgraphers block..if you will! :) I've been working on this idea since November, "well are these songs gonna mix fine? Will this work? etc etc..)I'm def trying out for this company REAL bad.. its just killing me to find a perfect song..(they say once you find the right song the dance sorta chorgrahs itself.) Here's the songs I have in mind..tell me what you think!

Over My Head- Cable Car
These Walls- Teddy Geiger
Pearl Jam- Better Man(not toooo sure about this one but..)
Goo Goo Dolls- better days(this one I really couldn't think of any movements to go along w. the lyrics)
Dare you To Move- Switchfoot (i think its too slow..through the entire. ya know.. no energy really?
(alright, I believe that's it.. NOW.. here's what I want you to do for me please!

1. By listening to those song, think up ideas to go along with the lyrics.. what could I do? Just, mainly THINK of ideas!! That's a big thing I'm looking for..

2.If you can think of ANY.. either oldies.. whatever (I think you know what type of "style" I'm looking for.. any other songs.. please list em!!

Again, I want it to start slow..where I can put pretty movements..emotion into it.. then getting faster..so I can do foutees, toetouches.. upbeat.. where I can put alot of ENERGY into it! Or, do you SUGGEST i go hunting for some songs under the jazz boards or what?!
Would you say a LYRICAL song..could get fast and have alot of energy into it..to act kinda "peppy"fast.. where I can do alot of moves.. then gets slower ya know..that kind of stuff! Or are lyrical songs mainly just slow?

Here.. if you're confused..and if you are I'm SORRY! ..lol I can totally reexplain it too you if you have ANY questions.. please don't hesitate to ask!!

3. Okay, do you watch the show.."So you think you can dance?" Well, this might be a better visualization for you.. so you know what I'm looking for(last thur..5-25-06.. there were two dancers in particualr I had my eye on.. I'm not sure of their names.. eee.. but one had one black jazz shoe on and nothing on the other foot..(he was a guy..VERY good.. lyrical/jazzish..that's what I'm looking for.)
And, another girl(all I know is she wore like a red, beaded..indian top on.. and she danced with alot of maturity.. All, I know is she wore red, with brown hair maybe? Ring any bells?
Those two styles.. hoepfully that helps you out with what I'm looking at!
ALMOST done..lol (sorry its SO long lol :)
Here's my ideas..

(I showed this to my mom and she really liked it.) The beginning I have(its hard to explain lol)KEEP IN MIND i'N FACING THE SIDE) .. but the beginning pose: One knee bend.. I'm hosting myself up with my arms..giving myself a nice arch/back stretch lol..tilting my head back..ARCHING my back:(keep in mind) hoepfully that helps you picture it. (it depends what knee is going to be bend and the other pointed out..turned out(cuz it depends which way I'm facing..but that's not importent ) Then (again, it depends what song I'm going to use.. but for example for.. cable car, I would wait untill the music starts.. and the leg I have out and pointed I would do a leg extention to my face, bringing my torso up.. pointing my leg out to the audience..come out rolling on the ground..feet pointed..

get it? lol
Other ideas I had:

JUMPS/TRICKS:
Fankick into an illusion.
Tursatay
toetouch(double? It depends If I can find some energenitic music.) I'm not sure
C-jump(on ground.. probably or a turning C-jump
Switchleap? Maybe to front I don't know..
Calypso
I'm also thinking of adding a variety of on the ground tricks..if you know what I mean..
Foutee
Turns (chaneys..double..pekays perhaps?)
Center leap
Leg hold..tilt?
Penicl Turn
arbesque
high kick?
backwards leap
splits
spreading legs
sharp movements(IF I can find energy in a song! lol)
middle splits(roll into them..)
attitude turn
slide on the floor
Emotions:
I've heard a million times.. using the "pushing..or pulling towards you.. reaching.. movements wtih your arms...and totally they work wonders with lyrics..i love it! And, I'm def using that.. like opening up your arms and such
pulsing is a good thing! lol For arms.. like circling them over my head..stuff like that
Bringing my leg into an arbesque
arms over face.. lungeing..

*Again, your probably wondering.. THIS ONLY SUPPOSED TO BE A 60 SEC OR 60:30 ROUTINE..HOW CAN YOU POSSIBLY FIT ALL OF THOSE TRICKS IN THAT TIME SPAN? Well, here's where your help comes in! (hoepfully lol)I know alot of those "tricks"etc, that I listed up there.. can be used in either a lyrical/slow part.. or fast..I just didn't want to take the time listing all where go in which part! geesh!
But, thats for reading this and hopefully you can help me out somehow!
Jees!NOW, do you relize how crazy I've been about this routine!! And, ya mixing wouldn't work but you probably though why I would concider it hey!

PS. When this routine is all finished..(I'm having two of my friends that are in the company.. help me..I'll show em what I got..getting more ideas and such) I'm showing it to my pom coach, and i'm taking a bunch of summer technique classes..so I could show it to them..SO..I'm pretty much well prepared..I just want to ask you guys what You though!

Thanks! :)

Erin

First of all, if you are still looking for song suggestions, try the song "Slave to the Vibe". We used it for our dance last year and it's so good. It starts off very slow and lyrically. Then, it gets really funky, but it's still pretty. It's from the "Sliver" soundtrack, by Aftershock. You can hear a clip here. www.amazon.com . . .

However, the second aprt is not necessarily "toe touch" worthy.

Ooh! Just thought of another song that starts off slow. It's not really lyrically in the begining though. "Proud Mary"

Another song that starts off slow, then gets funky is "Killing Me Softly"

If you want suggestions for any specific moves, I could give you a step. One that pops into mind is for arabesque. Pique (the step, not the turn) onto an arabesque, looking at your hand. Hold for two counts. Plie on the third count and hit an even higher attitude onn the fourth count, and look towards the audience. I learned that at a convention.

Another arabesque step I did. Do an arabesque, but look towards the audience. As you hit the pose, stroke your face with the back of your hand. Go from your forehead to your chin. Add a slight arch to your back. Then step into a nother arabesque with traditonal arms.

Anyway, that's just what popped into my head for you. I'll probably reply back later.
