I have had this problem for almost a year now and it has been bothering me. For some reason when I do back handsprings I twist so much it usually is my left arm that touches the ground first. My coach and I have been working on it and before she said it was the fact that I was looking for the ground after a while I gained confidence and got a nice roundoff backhandspring and a walk-over to maneqelly, I have never been able to do a standing back-handspring. Once I got it I got injured because of dance and couldn't practice anymore but now when I try it I still twist and I have 10x the fear now. I don't know what to do, it really depresses me. I have gotten my layout on the floor, which to me is easier because I don't rely on my arms and I have gotten my side aerial and I'm working on my front, and I just don't understand why the backhandspring is so hard for me!:( 2 Replies to Twisting Backhandspring |

We used to use this drill to get kids to practice their cartwheels for beam so they were fairly straight. Set up two soft mats to form a 'tunnel'. start out wide and gradually move them closer together.
Maybe to start, set up a mat at only at your left side. make sure it's a soft one, that can stand upright, so it doesn't hurt you when you flip. Obviously it's mental thing so your drills should be ok, with something physically there hopefully you'll straighten up.
good luck |
