Made sticky by hylndlas (107168) on 2006-09-01 10:17:03 great post!

Hiya! I thought it might be a good idea to make a post up for all the newbie ballroom dancers who might have questions...Im not very good at these things so please feel free to add your input to this thread!!

I'm starting Ballroom! What should I wear? Do i need a costume?!
No, at first you don't need a fancy costume!! The most importent thing is to be loose and comfy for dancing, so maybe just trousers or a nice skirt (not a tight one) and a simple top. Anything you can move freely without worrying or getting distracted in really. Hair back is useful but not compulsary.

What about shoes?
After a while you will need proper dance shoes, but have a few classes before you commit to buy. Until you're sure you want to do it, you can dance in bare feet, kitten heals or even dance sneakers. It might be an idea to check with the instructor to get their input here.

Do I need a partner?
Well..Ideally yes, but don't let that stop you! Go along to a class on your own if you need to, in most cases a teacher will dance with you, or you will get paired up. If you have a friend even on the same sex take them along too, the first few month of ballroom are all about fun and basics, not who you dance with.

I've done ballet/disco/jazz etc...will that help me?
You don't need any dance experience to have a go at ballroom, but any form of dance that has taught you discipline, stamina, posture and rhythm will definatly help you! Its a new style completly so just be open minded.

How much does it cost?
At first, lessons should only be a couple of pounds. Class lessons and social dances are fairly cheap....when you get more in depth you can book "private" lessons which cost more, depending on your teachers charges and the length of the lesson. Ballroom and latin can be very cheap, but once you start getting into shoes, costumes etc the cost mounts up, as with most sports.

I want to do Latin but not ballroom, can I?
Sure! Latin and ballroom are differnt genres of a similar style. You can specialise in either one, or do all ten dances. You will prolly start learning all of them gradually, but you can always pick a style to stick too after a while if you want.

Whats the music like?!
That depends on the dance you are doing! The music varies between dances....you might dance to traditional music or modern stuff! Theres lots of new songs that can be used in ballroom and latin.

Ok, I need a boy partner now!!
When you are ready for a real bona fide boy dance partner, you can firstly look around your dance school for one. If theres no-one suitable, ask your dance teacher to ask around, and maybe ring some other local dance schools. There are lots of websites like EADA and dancesport UK that advertise partners, have a look there!!

Im 12/18/30/60/100....am I too old to start?
Oh hell no!! You're never too old to learn something new, and theres classes for everyone regardless of age or ability!! Unlike ballet etc, you can dance ballroom until you are a hundred if you are fit enough, just brave it and see.

How high should my heels be when i buy shoes??
Start off slow, dont buy 3 inches for your first pair!! often a 1.5 heel or a 2.0 is fine....its all about practicing and getting your balance!! Latin shoes are often flared on the heal to give a bigger surface area and go gain more hip/leg action....it may be worthwile getting slim heals at first so you can switch between styles, although thats not importent :D.

Ok, Im convinced! Where do i find classes?
Ask your friends, check the local directories, or go on the USA/UK dancesport websites and find their schools/teachers list for a qualified experienced teacher. You can always try somewhere else if you don't like it~!

.....I thinkt thats my beginners guide done!! If I misseed anything just let me know! :S
Lots of Love

Hi heidi great post. I am sure all people starting out will find this a great guide. Maybe you should do one for intermediate dancers or dancers just starting out doing comps and stuff. That would help people with the transition from lessons to competing in medalist and open comps. Love sharon p.s did you get my reply to your pm the other day, if not please let me know. (the one about mablethorpe)
Any hints on competitions

Hi my name is Aimee and I am 9 years old. I am British and have a Russian partner Alexey who is 10. We both live in Dubai and love dancing together. Our teacher thinks we are ready for competitions, can you give us some advice as we have never done one before and want to get it right especially regarding costumes and regulations. We are sure our teacher will advise us too but it would be great to hear other views on competitions.

I love this site and look forward to hearing from fellow dancers.

Heidi!
This is an excellent post, so good I am going to give you Karma because I have become a little tiresome of the repeated posts asking the same questions over andover again, so hopefully your post will stop some of this!

Yeah, you are right, the numbers of young (and old) begining ballroom is on the increase all the time, and the recent TV interest has definately sparked interests from the public! It is great fun and can be as difficult or as simple as you make it!!

Heidi,

I'd love to see a dance competition in person. From what I've seen on TV; women seem to dress up for the occasion. Is that the norm? Do they dress as if they're going to the ballet or opera?

Thanks,

Heya, the new competition thread is up for you all! Hope its ok :D
Viki: yes we ladies do get dressed up! We have proper ballroom dresses and heavy make up...but some times if you are competing in a beginner or novice competition you can just get dressed up like you would for the opera! Does that make sense? Hope it does :D

Ok, I'm sorry I have to ask questions, I know people hate being asked the same thing all the time, but i can't seem to find if this one's been asked or not if it has please forgive me. I'm a rather big guy with rather large feet, My question is about shoes, Where can I find shoes that would fit me? most shoe stores don't carry my size. My wife and I are looking to start lessons for BallRoom as soon as we can find lessons but if I can't even find shoes that will work not sure if i should try or not. Thank you for any advice or information you can give me.

hey Whatamidoing! Don't worry about asking questions :D Have a look at the main shoe maker sites (FREED, Supadance etc), and if they don't do your size, the best thing to do is ring freeds up and ask if they can make you some specially. They've made me an extra wide pair before when I had a bad foot so that might help? If all else fails, advertise in dancenews so google extra large ballroom shoe?! :?

Sorry i can't be more helpful!!

Hey Viki,
Thats personal preference really....Some ladies do go smart-ish in suit jackets and nice tops, most competitors go in tracksuits, and some spectators just go casual. The best way to go is down the smart casual route, then you are acceptable either way! They aren;t really too many rles regarding audience address :D
