 Figure Skating Beginner's Questions! en>fr fr>en By mandarina Comments: 1277, member since Sun Jul 31, 2005On Sat Sep 09, 2006 05:46 PM
I am starting skating lessons in October. (Mainly because my sister is skating, and my mom wants me to accompany her to the arena, so I figured I can take some lessons at the same time) My question is that, do I consider myself as a beginner even if I had roller skated before (I did rollar skating for a while when i was small)? and, most importantly (since I have to register for the right class) is roller skating the same as ice skating? (this way, I might be able to tell what level I am at.) Other inputs on starting are super welcome. Thank you ahead! 4 Replies to Beginner's Questions! |

Wellllll the two are similar, I just think the techniques of the moves are a little different. For example, you can't stop the same way as you would on roller skates (at least I don't think). But you will probably progress pretty quickly especially since you have roller skating background |

Even things such as weight distribution on the blade are different. But yeah, roller skating will make it easier. You already understand the weight shifting and pushing... alot of beginners struggle with that. |

well i am a figure skater but i would not be able to roller skater to save my life. I can't do it at all. Well i think that roller skating would be a lot different, the skating may be the same but when you start to learn some elements you may find that the weight has to be in a different spot or you have to have the weight over the front: etc.
Any ways you try the beginners class for maybe 2 weeks and if you feel like it is not supporting your skill level, see if they can move you up to the next level.

Well, they both share their similarities, but they're both totally different.
Go the director of the figure skating rink and see what the beginners class will be learning.
Then, once you sign up and actually try the class, see if you are advanced enough to request to be moved up a level.
PM me with other questions =] Good luck!
